JUst read the article on boating rule. The author has it wrong. Your port light is red not green, so if you are traveling north at night and another is crossing from your starboard to your port you will see his port (red) light which gives the other boat the right of way.

The way I always remember it is just like looking at highway traffic lights:
If I can only see your red-port light: I have to stop or do something to avoid a collision, the other guy has the right of way, I have to give way.
If I can see only your green-starboard light: I have the "green light" to proceed and I have the right of way. The other guy has to give way to me.
Peter, with respects to the author of that article for his time, I'd recommend it be removed until corrected.
