    Question Why eat fresh fish?

I received the following email from a writer doing an article on eating your catch and or kill. If anybody has any thing they would like to say, please post a reply here. Include your name and hometown and I will pass that along with your comments if you like.

    Hi, Peter.
My name is Van**** **an, and I'm writing a story about hunters and fishermen who eat what they catch, for an upcoming issue of ******* Health Magazine. Most of our readers get their fish from a grocery store, so we're interested in telling the story of anglers who catch and prepare their own fish. We want to know why they do it, whether there is a cost savings, etc. I found your name on the fishin.com website, so I thought maybe I could talk to you for my story. Please let me know if we can talk in the next day or so. Or, if it's easier for me to email you questions, I'll send some your way.
Thank you for your time, and I appreciate your help.

Umm, cause they taste good I'm mostly catch and release. However, if I deep hook a fish and don't think that it will survive, I'll take it home for dinner. I have been on extended fishing trips where we've kept a few for the table while there. Fresh fish just tastes better. Last time I did this we grilled up some Sea Bass within 30 minutes of catching them. Doesn't get much fresher than that! Also added a little something to the whole fishing experience for the week.

Bluegill chips. Fried just after they are fileted. Nothing better.

I don’t know about any cost savings, after you factor in the cost of gear and the amount of time involved; but I would guess that there are some fine health benefits from the stress release of being out in nature, right on the water, either spending time by yourself or in conversation with one or two close friends. Also, most of the fish you’d catch from most of the waters around here are probably as healthy and pollution-free as what you’d find in the grocery (not that that’s saying much…)

I don't know...depends on where you catch them I guess...

Some of them might have more mercury than a Queen concert.

LOl funny stuff....Seriously though I don't see a cost savings at all once you consider gas, boat(if used), tackle and other misc costs like insurance. I think your way ahead just buying some fish at the grocery or fish market.

If your going fishing anyway and want to keep a few to eat then it's hard to beat that cost but if your going fishing to just catch fish for the table I think your wasting money, unless you have a cheap cheap way of getting there and fishing from the bank or canoe.

Fresh fish is good but I'm pretty picky about where that fish comes from. In kentucky I pretty much don't eat fish caught here. If I'm fishing saltwater I eat alot more of those fish.

I hardly ever keep fish and freeze them..........

Rather, when I'm in the mood for some fish, and I'm in an area where I can catch something to harvest and EAT, I generally do.

There is nothing like crazy fresh fish. I mean, catch it , clean it, eat it.......all within a few hours. Nothing better than that.

I've done it with crappies, stripes, whites and hybrids at KY.......
I've done it with gills and small bass from dogwood.
I've done it with eyes, smallies, northerns and lakers up in Canada.
I've done it with rainbows at Wolf Creek and Dix.

Like I said.........NOTHING like fresh fish.

    Later,

    Geo
