how can this be? all the bashing the President takes for such a bad Economy, and now the states are reporting big surplus funds. here are a few states close to home with SURPLUS FUNDS. Indiana has a surplus of 2.15 BILLION yes BILLION. and Tennessee reported a surplus of 194 MILLION , and yes Ky has a surplus as well 124 million. can you believe this and with the economy in such a bad shape. has this been on FOX news?

I think a lot of it is taxes.
Over half the 50 states are projecting budget surpluses....a sign of slow but steady improvement as we come out of The Great Recession. Tax Collections are generally up and several states are projecting more cash in reserves than they forecasted at budget time. The smart states will use that surplus to build up reserves that got depleted as we went into the recession. The economy is getting better, but a cautious optimism needs to be had...indicators really don't scream that we're coming up into good times. You could make a real good argument, if you are an economist, that we could be heading down again before we go up.

It doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Don't get me wrong good news is good news but once you dig into it a little you find the story isn't as portrayed. I would have loved to see that taxes were not raised during the recession but I guess politicians can't help themselves. Cutting spending is great! Trimming down the fat is also good since that's what us private sector folks have to do as well.
I'm not gonna look it up but I am curious how many of those states were legislatively Dem controlled and how many were GOP controlled. How many had GOP governors and how many had Dem?

That's probably because they've raised property taxes every year since Obama took office,along with every other way they could sneak a tax in on utility bills,etc.
I can't speak for Indiana or Tennessee,but Kentucky has a whole lot of roads in disrepair that aren't being maintained properly,plus they've found every way they can to screw state employees out of money.
I'd rather go presidentless than put up with Obama and his bankrupting the country again.

my friend, when you speak of roads. your talking something I understand. building roads is how I put the bread and butter on my family's table. I've done this type of work for 39 years and have worked steady 5 and 6 days a week for most of that time. been laid off work 4 times in all, was off 2 or 3 months at a time the first 3 lay off's and the last time I was off for 8 months. that was back in 2008 when the road construction all but dried up under Bush's control. he was so busy building schools and roads in Irock, and forgot to let any work in the USA. after Obama took control, there's more construction work in ky than I can ever remember. I've had 2 other big companies call me wanting me to go to work for them. I know in some areas of work things are really bad, but the type of work I do is booming under Obama. and I have to like that.

Got to remember that "tax collections are up" can mean a combination of a lot of things. On one hand, it could be that tax rates were raised by the government...but on the other hand it can mean strengthening economy with incomes up, thus more income tax dollars collected...or higher business profits which mean more profit tax dollars collected...more people travelling, thus more hotel taxes collected...more retail spending, thus more sales tax collected.
A lot of states, even Repub controlled (NJ), are looking at taxing online sales to generate more revenue. In the past, they had been very opposed to that.
It's all taxes...but not all an increase in rate. The government earns more as the economy earns more.
Coming out of the worst economy since the Depression, I'm not too surprised we are trending up...Hard to go anywhere but up when you're at the bottom.

I'm also in construction, commercial construction, (hospital, schools, government facilities, etc.). In 2008 I was still rockin' and rollin' under BUSH, but was warned by the owner of the company that I worked for at that time that no one in the company should plan on doing anything big, maybe put off that bathroom remodel or room addition because even though we had plenty of work at that time, the future was looking bleak, ESPECIALLY if Nobama was going to be elected. Things were turning south quick! Sure enough, come 2010 under Nobama I got laid off, which was the first time I had been laid off since 1982. I was lucky enough to get another job within a matter of about 48 hours (not exagerating), with the same pay. I was blessed and lucky all at the same time. Fast forward to 2012...still in construction, but got laid off again in March (still under Nobama). This time I wasn't so lucky and blessed, this time it took me eight weeks to find another job, still at the same pay level.
Nobama has had four years to straighten this mess out...blame it on Bush or whoever you want to blame it on. The fact is Nobama new the cards he was being dealt, no sucker punches, no blind sides...he knew what he was dealing with when he took office...and four years later I am NOT better off...haven't had a raise since about 2007 or 2008.
I didn't vote for Nobama then and I sure as heck ain't gonna vote for him this year either.

Yes,Obama threw some money out there for a few new highway projects,but I drive around the state in lesser traveled areas frequently and there are a whole bunch of roads in terrible disrepair.Fact is those Obama backed "Put America Back To Work" highway jobs only employ a small sector of Out of Work Construction workers,Home Building Industry is the slowest I've seen since pre-1980,the Commercial Construction Industry is slightly better,but because of increased lowball bidding knocks the majority out of big projects,Obama has done everything he can to regulate Coal Miners and connected trades out of a job,raising our electric bills sky high coming to you soon.
There is intense competition over mediocre paying jobs,kids coming out of high school are screwed,kids graduating from college are having a terrible time finding decent employment,suddenly Obama after FOUR LONG YEARS OF MISERY decides he has a plan to bring back jobs,funny he cared more about spending us into debt and forcing a healthcare plan NOBODY WANTS on us,while exempting the House,Senate,and his Union Buddies from Obamacare.That's right,the POS Obama gives waivers to Unions exempting them from paying into Obamacare,BS.

I work downtown Louisville.......in the city where they repave Main Street every few years if it NEEDS it or not.
I kid you NOT, there are no less than 8 people of a freakin crew down there every morning, afternoon and dinner "working". I have not seen more than 1 or 2 people doing ****........I never knew it took 8 people to dig a freakin hole.
1 to dig, 2 to watch him dig. 1 to talk on the walkie to some other fool down the road walking around, and two sitting around JAWING.
You want to know why 124 million could not build a doghouse.........THERE YOU GO.
Get the freakin unions out of it. I'd love to see some NON Union jobs actually getting done in this area. Maybe they are, but I can guarantee you these folks were not non union or fixed bid.
