Brookville lake striper help

Wanting to fish Brookville for stripers this fall. Can anyone give me any detail and advice on the stripers there?

Fish mainlake points with the biggest spook you can find on lower lake. Find the baitfish on points and hold on!

never fished livebait for them. If you find the baitfish on pts. try them.

I actually talked to the DNA for the area and his Striper report was less than exciting. They haven't been stocked in years and when they electo-shock for them there aren't very many.
While Walleye fishing Brookeville this Spring I asked the Game Warden about them and he told me "If there 's Striper's in here I've never seen one".
The DNA guy said Hardy Lake was actually where they expect the next State record Striper to come from.

Now I hope some one on here can say they have caught Stripers in Brookvile as it is very close to my N KY home and am going to be fishing there this Fall.

I dont know about brookville but i did see some guys pull in some nice stripers on hardy. where i dont understand how a striper could survive anyway. They die in patoka and they die in lake cumberland both bigger and deeper lakes.

I've fished Brookville for years and have never caught a striper. Walleye, muskie,white bass, small mouth, large mouth. The best lake I've found stripers in is Barren river. But I have caught stripers in East fork. In fact I caught a 9lber this morning fishing for large mouth.

You have not been given very good information. You may have talked to a "DNR" person, but if he was not an actual fisheries biologist, he likely was giving you his opinion. Im a member of the striper association here, and keep close tabs on what's going on with them. We are in continual contact with the biologists here. I live close to Brookville, but seldom fish it for stripers. When I do, I can usually catch a couple.

Brookville has indeed been getting stocked. I know in 2010 it got 50,000 +/- stripers. I don't have the info at my finger tips, but I do have the last 10 years striper/hybrid stocking data. Now, Brookville has water quality problems that the stripers cannot tolerate. They gat to about 8 to 12 lbs, and a lot of them die off every year when the oxygen gets low. There are a few that survive to get to decent size. Don't ask me why they keep putting them in there, but they do. Your DNR guy was correct in saying that they are not very plentiful.

Hardy has been stocked with stripers, and hybrids. The state's plans are to make it a hybrid only lake. I fish Hardy several times a year, and have for many years. The next state record is NOT going to come from Hardy. I have caught several fish that are the oldest age class in the lake. For their age, they are no where close to where they should be. I highly doubt one will reach 30lb. I have caught several of the older fish in the mid 20's, but that is as big as they are going to get in that little, shallow lake. Too much summer, and winter stress for them to get to 40lb. That age class of fish is also about gone from the lake, as not many people practice catch and release there. Raccoon lake is the lake for BIG indiana stripers. If you are interested, I can get you the stocking data.

One thing to remember about fish surveys that use electro shocking methods. They only survey the shallow waters along the banks. You won't find many Stripers in that water. Stripers like to roam the depths. Electro shocking probes only hand into the water a foot or so deep. And the current won't go that deep into the water. I don't put a whole lot of faith in the results of surveying with electro shocking.

I've been out on the Wabash River in the Purdue Fish Electro Shock Boat and actually helped to sample fish on the Wabash River at West Lafayette, IN. That River is pretty shallow as Rivers Go. We caught a lot of fish using the Electro Shocking Boat, but we could cover all the River in that area as it was all pretty shallow. Deeper Rivers like the OHIO RIVER can't be sampled as easily as the Wabash River.

Lift Nets and or other types of nets would be a better way to sample the lake for stripers. But I'm afraid that may also destroy the resource if not performed properly.

I'm not even sure if these fish can naturally reproduce in Brookville Lake. Perhaps you might call the IDNR fishery biologist for that area to see what he or she may have to say. I'd listen to them before anyone else.
