Bluegrass Fishing Report for Sunday 8/26/12

Fished Bluegrass Pit Sunday morning and caught a few fish. Caught one nice Channel Catfish in about 20 ft of water and then caught two Bluegills while trolling a crank bait in deeper water. Water temp was HOT! Slight Wind. Lots of clouds but I still got some sun on me in the 4 hours I fished.

I still want to get a couple of the SIDE PLANER BOARDS so that the baits are further out away from the boats path. Water in the boats path is disturbed and the fish that the boat passes over directly are being spooked. But the deeper your baits go the less spooked the fish will be.

I'm fishing Bandit Crank Baits. It's best to have a good lure retriever in your boat as it's possible to get hung up using these baits and they are not cheap. I can't afford to lose too many of them.

I'm slow trolling with the gas engine and trying to keep the speed down to around 1.5 mph. The only way I can do that right now is by tolling into the wind. But fishing is best when you troll with the wind. As the fish tend to face into the current and the winds help form underwater currents. Going downwind it's hard to keep the speed below 1.8 to 2.0 mph. Now a bass or a catfish can easily swim faster than 2.0 mph. But the crappie prefer a slower presentation and I'm searching for suspended slab crappie. I figured out a good spot to catch some crappie in Bluegrass pit and will have to give that area a try this fall. When the water temperatures drop back down in the 50's the crappie fall bite will pick up big time.

I went out to another pit a few weeks back and caught some nice 1 Lb 12" crappie. I took pictures of the fish and then put them back into the lake. They will make the "GENE POOL" better IMHO.

I've got to do some work in my pictures and get them into photobucket before I can attach them to this thread.

It was nice to get the boat back out on the water. One the way over to the lake I saw a bird of prey perched on a fence post not more than 100 ft from the edge of the road. It's seeing the wide life that makes the day for me. The other day I photographed a Blue Heron Catching and eating a fish. But I was too far away to get a large enough image for my likes. I wish I had a 600 mm lens so that I could reach out and grab these critters at longer range. I like to fill the frame with the bird or animal and still see the individual feathers or hairs in the picture. Those type of fast long lens are too expensive for my current budget. I'm an amateur photographer not a pro. I can't afford to drop 10 grand on a camera lens.

    Some more Fish Pictures

I caught these crappie at Otter Pit on Aug 3rd 2012. These were some nice crappie for these pits. They measured about 12" long and I'd guess they were slightly under 1 lbs in weight. I didn't weight them with a scale and returned them back to the water after I took pictures of them.

Fished the same spot today for a few hours and only caught a few small crappie

Some days you get the bear and other days the Bear gets you! All I really got to day was a dang gone sunburn.

Still it was nice to be out on the water. I fished with minnows and caught about 12 small crappie by drop lining near a drop off. Fish were in about 7 ft of water to about 15 ft of water. Right on the edge by a submerged bush.

I trolled crank baits later in the day but didn't get a bite. I blanked on using the cranks. If fished from 20 ft to 200 ft back from the boat and estimate the depths fish from 8 ft down to about 26 ft down.

I have the precision trolling bible or book and it's got the dive tables for the Bandit 200, 300 and 400. I don't have any Bandit 400's as Gander Mountain in Evansville doesn't carry those. They do carry the Bandit 700. But the Precision Trolling Book doesn't have any dive table for the Bandit 700. I think that's BS.

Still want to buy some planer board to get the baits out to the side of the boat. I think that will catch more fish.
