The whole thing stunk...no doubt about it...
But let's remember that they were voting for 2 things:
(1) Include the word "God" in the party platform, which for some reason had been removed. ???
(2) Recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on the party platform.
It wasn't 2 separate votes - It was 1 vote, yes or no, for both.
The "NO" votes were at least 50%...maybe even the majority. The chairman called it a "YES" after three attempts anyway, even when there's no way it was a 2/3 majority. (aka - This whole convention and verbal voting thing is just a political masturbation and means nothing. However, it sure was a PR gaffe by your delegates!)
I'm curious if it was more about NO to God, or NO to the Jerusalem/Israel position? One would think that the two would have been verbally voted on separately. I'd like to hear the delegates stance on each, exclusive of one another. I say that because it's not like religion wasn't present at the DNC - There were prayers, invocations, and plenty of references to God and religion. I'm sure that we'll hear plenty about it going forward. The GOP has seized heavily since last night in making it more about the NO to God issue, a bit less about the NO to Jerusalem issue.
The whole No to God thing really isn't surprising, given the ridiculously extreme politically correct environment that liberals try to live within...and it's not like this administration has been a big friend to religion anyway. What I think a lot of people are missing is that supposedly Barack was "shocked and surprised" that the word "God" had been removed from the platform. "Why on Earth would that have been removed?" he supposedly said. My question to that is: DID YOU NOT READ YOUR OWN PARTY'S PLATFORM BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED? Sounds like a true no-show Senator that doesn't even read the bills.
I might can understand the desire to not make a stand on Israel, especially since Obama went on the Arab Apology Tour early in his candidacy and wants to be spineless on any kind of stance against Iran. The God referendum is a total backfire though. Never should have been removed in the first place. PR disaster.
On a different note, Slick Willie gave the speech of his life last night. Nobody can say that the Democrats don't know how to speak to the people.
