    Angry Castnetting at McAlpine

We seen a guy cast netting shad at the lower dam @ McAlpine on the island , after he left we went up there and fished a while

We seen a big pile of shad this guy left up there to die , but in the pile of shad there was like 5 baby stripers...this is not cool.

Please have some respect for the wonderful fishery we have at our finger tips !! This is wanton waste . There are rules about netting gamefish , if you do net a bass, sauger , Striper , you MUST immediatley return it to the water !!

I have a couple of buddies that commercial net the river for spoonies and they always return the stripers if they do net one .
If they were to get caught netting game fish , they told me the DNR could take their boat . It is just like poaching a deer .

Please have some repsect for our Ohio River

I too have seen this several times. I inform the fisherman and help them return all fish to the water as a nice gesture. Only a few times have people been rude and left the fish. But I am a nice guy and do my part. Others just need to do theirs as well. I do not net very often but the dam is an easy place to catch bait fish and I would like to keep it that way.

Another example of rude disrespectfull people on the beautifull Ohio River. My solution wont work for everybody, 1st gather up all the bait/game fish he wasted, 2nd lock him up and feed him the fish he wasted for his meals, 3rd ban him from fishing the Ohio River for at least 3 years.

Now I like your way of thinking SIR !!!....WE wont talk about folks coming in on you, and dropping anchor right where your bait lands when you are casting. That would never happen at the Falls LOL

Add to that, one short bass=3 fingernails pulled out with a pair of pliers, life for an expired license sticker and the death penalty if a bass tournament fisherman brings more than one dead fish to scales in less than a year.

Jay this is a big pet peeve of mine. Can't stand to watch the guy's at the upper dam netting everything up there and walkin out with duffel bags full of all kinds of fish . Meanwhile the DNR are more worried about checkin a guy like me with 500$ of gear for a 20$ fishing license. Not to mention makin sure I'm not having a beer in the middle of gods country. And while I'm on ,my soap box,to those that think you have to net 500 shad and take just the guts and leave the rest piled up all over the place here's a little advice... other fish will eat the whole shad...they don't have butchers to remove that for them. Sorry for the rant...Chuck

Why cant you eat the stripers? They are preadators and dont eat junk off the bottom like other fish.

I'm kinda new on using a cast net but on my last trip to Mcalpine I threw a perfect throw (for me) right on a school of shad.
There must have been at least 200 of them in my net. I knew we'd never use that many and released most of them right back in the river, keeping the rest for that day's usage. Even with a Magic Bubbles in the bucket they all died in about 10 minutes.
I confess I didn't sort out what I caught as to whether or not I'd snagged some game fish minnows. They all looked like shad to me.
