Any Woodworkers on here?

you guys talk about most anything on here, I don't remember seeing a Woodworking topic. I like to work with wood, I have a little wood working shop. I take it in spells, it will keep me busy for a while, and I'll lose interest in doing it for awhile. I have over the years built some of the furnishings in our house. my Daughter got married last November and bought a house with a fireplace. it had just a 3" thick board fasten to the fireplace brick, for a Mantel piece. I thought it was time to build her a real Mantel. so yesterday I built her one. still like sanding it and spraying it with a coat of Antique White paint. don't know if this will work or not, but I'll try to post a picture of the Mantel I built. this one is without the sanding and finish coat of paint. if this works, I'll post another picture of the finished product. if there's any woodworkers on here, post some of your work with pictures. should make for some good reading.

I'm not too good with wood. I've done a few things, but not much.

I build high end gaming systems for folks on the side. Actually have a small incorporated business that I run it all through.

Unfortunately, the market for HIGH end stuff has pretty much dried up. I used to make a pretty good profit margin, but like everything coming from China, I simply cannot compete with the cheap junk.

The boxes I build are usually 2 to 3 times the prices of a wally world e-machine special, but convincing someone to dump the bucks on REAL hardware has gotten harder and harder.

I still do custom stuff, but not nearly as much as I used to........

Nice work! I also work with wood on the side. Wood plugs in my case. I do pretty well fishing with them. Other stuff with wood (like your mantle), not so much!

Very nice. I have a question for you wood workers. I got an old rocker out of my moms Attic and don't know how to refinish it. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I have a LOT of good wide board feet of good lumber...Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Poplar, some cedar...I live in Louisville if you're interested in seeing any of it. Could make someone a decent deal....or a better deal than you'll get at any lumber yard anyway. Most of it is rough cut...so you'll have to plane it down yourself.

And..decent looking mantle by the way.

I don't know it all about finishing, but for what it's worth. if it has a painted finish on it, go to Lowe's or Home depot and get some paint stripper, and brush it on the chair. it will be a gel form so it will cling to the vertical surface. let it set for a while to soften the paint. then scrap the old paint off. then sand it good and apply the new finish. if the finish is to be painted again. spraying it on looks the best.


if it has a stained finish, do the same treatment as above, then after sanding is complete. plow all the dust off you can, then wipe it with a clean cloth, wet with denatured alcohol. let it dry, then with a clean cloth wipe a new coat of stain on it. put it on heavy and wipe it off, until you get the color you want. then let it dry over night and spray 3 finish coats of clear Lacquer on it. at about 2 hours between coats. hope this helps.
