Ok Romney was speaking on MSNBC today and took a question about teacher unions.
He said that the teachers unions represent teachers and not students. I agree with this statement. Although there are times when what is good for the teachers is good for the students.
I agree that the teachers unions can wield to much influence on many issues. However, I don't think they are the root cause for all education shortfalls.
Romney then went on to say that teachers unions should be barred from contributing to political campagins. He said we have to keep teacher union money out of the political process because they bargain with the government for services.
I would tend to agree with this statement, however, what about defense contractors that contract with the US government, highway contractors or any contractor that bids or does business with the US governmet. There is a stone wall in place to try and limit corporate contributions to political campaigns.
Corporate political contributions have more influence on elections that 100 times the the amount of contributions by teachers unions.
My complaint is why target/limit one and not the other.
If I were King we would keep all election financed by individuals with strict $$ limits on amount individuals could contribute. This would keep the playing field fair and check donations of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from coprorate sources being funneled through individuals. We would all be limited to a fixed amount.
