    Kentucky Lake Bluegill/Red Ear

I"m looking at taking a trip to Kentucky Lake in the spring to fish for the big bluegill they have. Has anyone ever done this with any success? I'm not familiar with the lake at all and I'm wondering if I'm setting myself up for a busted trip or not.

I camped at hillmans ferry on the land between the lakes, and there's a boat ramp at the campsite to the ky lake side. when you launch your boat and are going toward the main lake, about 300 ft from the ramp on the right side, theres an old rock quarry that is part of the lake now. it's the best bluegill fishing I ever did. crickets under floater, right up against the rock wall.

Check on You Tube for Ky Afield's Barkley Lake Bluegill/Redear videos ... that'll give you some idea of what to expect.

I would suggest for your first trip that you get a guide to take you out and put you on those gills and red ears here. Not saying you can't do it on your own, but with a day with one of our local good panfish guides can pay dividends not only for that day, but for future trips. Contacting one of these guides can also help you decide the prime time for being here (historically). Here are some guides that I would highly recommend for your trip:

Kirk Weber (Captain Kirk's Guide Service)
Craig Hipshire (Craig Hipshire's Guide Service)
Rodney Hairgrove (Rodney Hairgrove's Guide Service)

If you do decide to go this route...you need to be booking very soon as these folks get booked up way ahead of time during the prime panfish periods.

    Kentucky Lake Bluegill/Redear

We have in the past went to Ky. Lake in April for Crappie but got into the Bluegill/Redear last year with the warm spring.
The redear we found were around pea gravel and mustard grass was the magic combination but also found big bluegill searching for them. we would throw into a foot or less and drag out to about 3', if no bite... move on til you hit them.

As a rule we were told the 1st -2nd week of May is the time to hit the redear but like I said, last year with the warm spring I think is why we caught them good in April. Hope this helps and good luck.

P.S. We stayed at Hesters resort where there is a channel that takes you directly across to Duncan and Sugar Bay and thats where we found them. Although I,m sure you can find them on the west side of the lake also.. We go to LBL side for Bass too. Tech
