Just because you did not serve does not mean your Thanks are not appreciated. Actually, a Thanks from people that did not serve is certainly appreciated....unless you were an adult (or at least old enough to understand the sacrifices men and women and their families make by serving in the military) during the Viet Nam era and you did not start Thanking them until it became politically correct to do so, which came about during the Gulf War. Personally, other than family, I do not recall one person having ever thanked me for my service until it became politically correct to do so. I do however, like Hlleonard remember having many folks treat me less than nice, call me a baby killer etc......during those days. If you were one of those folks...then what I said about your Thanks being too late applies to you. If you were not one of those folks...then Carry On.
