Found this today. Click on the Hunting and Fishing maps. I closed the hunting tab, then zooomed in on lake cumberland, and did the aerial view. Select the measure function, and you can select a start point, then an end point, and draw a line between the 2 points to get an actual distance. Seems like a great way to explore a new lake you may want to try.

Using the measure function in google earth does the same thing anywhere in the world you want to go. Very helpful when planning a trip or finding launch ramps. You can also save a push pin (mark a spot) anywhere you want and then get directions to/from there.

Bing has a similar product with no download required.

Of course you will have to have a phd in computer engineering to operate it. But you can get that online in a short 60 months and Obama will pay for it and show up at your graduation. It also comes with six months of the services of a computer engineer from india to get you started. You have to pay extra for a translator.
