This was tragic and it breaks my heart but I say as a leader how about we think and not react with our heart? How many deaths a year are by guns? By drinking and driving? By gang fights? Knives? Drugs? Domestic violence? Why are we so fixated on guns? IMO it's because folks want to limit our rights because they feel the need to control others and nothing is sacred anymore. This murderer could have used a knife, crossbow, pipe bomb, fire or whatever to kill kids and adults and I seriously doubt if ole dufus and his cronies would have jumped in as much as they have. Why would they? They have nothing to gain but this is different because it was a gun and in their eyes guns kill people and it helps their agenda.

I changed the channel as soon as I saw the potus on tv. He had nothing to say that I wanted to hear. I'm with Mark on my feelings about this tool plus I cannot say what I want to say since it would violate the rules of this board. I will say that he and his rich supporters and appointed nutjobs are for gun control and they will use every opportunity to push their agenda.

BTW...doesnt he get an opportunity to appoint a few Supreme Court Judges??
If all the adults at that school had been armed, there would have been a different outcome. The guy didn't have to have a gun to kill those children; he could have used a knife, a machete, a hammer, crowbar, and the list goes on. I don't think the idiots who want to take away our guns even get "it." I'm so sorry about all those children and adults being killed but taking away our guns won't stop the deaths of children. Sat. night a 16 year-old got killed in a knife fight, and the boy he was fighting with is in the hospital with stab wounds. At a high school 9 miles from my house, a 17 year-old boy was killed in a shooting as he turned his car around in a parking lot; last week a 17 year-old, same class, was killed when her boyfriend made a sudden turn in front of a loaded log truck; a little 9 year-old boy who is my cousin's step-grandson was killed when he rolled his dad's new 4-wheeler as he rode it ALONE two weeks ago. Obama doesn't have the answer and neither does anyone else.

I think people need to stop lumping accidental deaths and deaths from cigarettes, etc. in with murders. It's really a poor argument. I've seen others arguing that there are so many more prevalent causes of death than being shot, but most of them are not intentional murders. Plus, everyone dies of something. It's the one certainty in life.

There has to be something we can do to help prevent these tragedies other than just telling the government to let us keep our guns.

Crazy people are CRAZY.......institutionalize them.........and be done with it. A few billion a year should suffice.

There no place for mentally ill to go. Most of the mental institutions have been closed over the years to save money[state and federal].

What about the movie theater shooter? I can't remember if he had mental illness issues or not. I think we can agree that people who would do this sort of thing have to be crazy, but do all of them exhibit serious signs of it prior to the incidents?

My Mother was a Lab Tech for Central State Hospital for over 30 years. She did alot of work to help the mentallly ill and even had some dealings with the criminally insane in that fenced building in the front by the road. There were some really bad people housed there. I say all that to give some form of semi-educated through her of course answer to your question Michael.

No not always are there warning signs, in fact there are some cases that just came from no where that was not forseen in any way. However given said that, MOST there are major warning signs. I forget some of the statistics I have heard her speak of pertaining to the criminally insane but usually someone down the line seen the signs and heard the threats and either ignored them or brought it to the authorities attention only to have it fall on deaf ears until something really tradgic happens.

I agree with this, but warning signs do not equal mental illness. What I'm saying is that not all of these mass shootings have happened from someone who was diagnosed as mentally ill.

I will go back to my suggestion that if we started holding family members criminally liable for the actions of these murderers they might take the warning signs more seriously and put a stop to the tragedies before they start.

Would you be suggesting the parents of adults such as this young man, I think I saw where he was 20, be held criminally responsible for their actions?.. Would that not be opening a very large can of worms... It seems to me we have enough people already going after the folks with deep pockets in the court system simply because the legal system allows them to.
