The paper's publisher, Janet Hasson, president of the Journal News Media Group, defended the decision in a statement Wednesday.
"One of our roles is to report publicly available information on timely issues, even when unpopular. We knew publication of the database (as well as the accompanying article providing context) would be controversial, but we felt sharing information about gun permits in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings," she said.

Translation: We knew it was going to be controversial, and get us publicity, so we went ahead and published it. After all, there's no such thing as "bad" publicity!

"Publishing gun owners' names makes them targets for theft or public ridicule. It is journalistic arrogance to abuse public record privilege, just as it is to air 911 calls for no reason or to publish the home addresses of police or judges without cause," Al Tompkins, a Poynter senior faculty member, said in a statement Wednesday. "Unwarranted publishing of the names of permitted owners just encourages gun owners to skip the permitting."

Translation: they have every legal right to do it, and any lawsuits over it would accomplish nothing, except maybe getting them to take down the map (kinda late for that now). But that doesn't change the fact that they're complete a-holes for doing it.

Glad I live in KY and not NY.

Now, I wonder if the newspaper will also be quick to report:
    1. Any increase in home burglaries that occur at addresses they published.
    2. Additional burglaries that occur in homes that WERE NOT listed as having a gun.
    3. The number of burglars shot after the list was published as they tried to break in to either a gun owner/permit holders house or neighbors house.

Are you a lawyer? How do you know it isn't illegal, this is new territory. I will bet if someone has enough cash and a hungry lawyer they can get something out of this one especially if something adverse stems from it.

In New York the Arm pit of America you can Sue for ANYTHING.

    Smile Ahem!

I know that two years ago I said that if you apply for thatCCP you were making a mistake.I think that any permit or license is public record or is listed somewhere. If the sheriff knows, and the deputy knows, and the wives know, and your wife knows, wheres the secret?

No doubt that registering weapons and getting state issued permits is a record and is on a list somewhere....plenty of validity in your thinking. I have family members that refuse to get permits for that very reason, but carry concealed every day. Since that is breaking the law, I won't do it. I don't believe in Open Carry, so for me it was a matter of IF I wanted to carry a weapon, I must get a permit.

I'll take my chances with the County Sheriff and the government having my info, but for a media outlet to publish a map with name and address of everyone with a handgun permit is totally irresponsible.

Criminals will break into houses and steal stuff, especially guns. The government won't...yet...and if the time comes that they will, having my name on a list will be the least of everyone's worries, because it will be revolution.

    steal what

With legal guns being easy to get, and almost no identity required at flea markets, gun shows, and private tranactions, guns are not that scarse. And home break ins while you are out can be made very hard with a little effort. And home break ins while you are in residence, uh whats that iron for? When the time and call comes, it wont be crooks at the door, and guess what? When the majority wants security from the minority, they pass a law. Someone gets screwed.
