No doubt that registering weapons and getting state issued permits is a record and is on a list somewhere....plenty of validity in your thinking. I have family members that refuse to get permits for that very reason, but carry concealed every day. Since that is breaking the law, I won't do it. I don't believe in Open Carry, so for me it was a matter of IF I wanted to carry a weapon, I must get a permit.

I'll take my chances with the County Sheriff and the government having my info, but for a media outlet to publish a map with name and address of everyone with a handgun permit is totally irresponsible.

Criminals will break into houses and steal stuff, especially guns. The government won't...yet...and if the time comes that they will, having my name on a list will be the least of everyone's worries, because it will be revolution.

With legal guns being easy to get, and almost no identity required at flea markets, gun shows, and private tranactions,guns are not that scarse. And home break ins while you are out can be made very hard with a little effort.And home break ins while you are in residence, uh whats that iron for?When the time and call comes, it wont be crooks at the door, and guess what? When the majority wants security from the minority, they pass a law. Someone gets screwed.

Guns aren't easy to get FREE. Last time I checked, criminals don't like to pay for stuff. Sure, they could go buy a gun at a flea market or at a gun show in the parking lot from a private individual who doesn't do a background check, but not for free. Whereas, they could break into my house and steal my guns for nothing, then become the dude in the parking lot at the gun show selling them for cash so that they can buy crack to feed their habit.

Guns, especially right now, are like having CASH. I guess it would be OK to publish a list of everyone in your town, the amount of cash they have under their bed or in a Cool Whip container in their freezer, and their address?

I don't think so.

Theft-proofing your home (though very smart) has nothing to do with it, in my opinion. It's still wrong to publish information like that to the general public.

It's public record, but I would be more mad if I was a non gun owner. Robbers now know who to target.

There's lots of stuff my wife knows I'd prefer not to share too widely. I just hope my wife don't find out what teh sheriff knows, you know?

No secret but I don't want to be identified on a map like a sex offender. Anyone ever see a map of sex offenders in your area on the news? They may have done their time and they may have been law abiding up to now but have they been identified in the news?? You can go online to check since it's public record but are they dangerous enough to make it to the news?? No is my answer but yet these spineless, sorry excuses for humans decided that law abiding gun owners should be identified. Not folks who show they want to molest men, women and children just registered gun owners.
It was wrong and done in poor taste. It was just another attempt to demonize law abiding citizens by stupid people who think guns should be illegal and the thought of legal gun owners being identified was somehow beneficial to the public was ridiculous.
If they really want to inform the community of things how about post who has been busted for drugs, DUI's, sex offenders, tax evaders, crooks and even worse politicians on a map. Let's see how that works or helps others feel safe.

The NRA should post a map with all NY anti gun politicians' homes on it. Make those balloons blue. Put the homes of that newspaper's staff on there with red balloons.
