RE: skip livebaiting and don't go alone.

I'll tie the to together and I'm gonna be totally candid.

First off, with the current, and the stuff that is in the water there, rock ledges, old metal pipelines, normal sunken river debris, you probably will lose a bunch of bottom rig gear. Second reason. That part of the river sets just a couple blocks from a pretty rough section of Louisville. I'm being candid here and not pulling punches. While there are some great folks that live there, there are also so real thugs. When I went there it seemed like 1/2 the folks on teh bank were after fish, and the other 1/2 was after fishing gear.

When I went down there, I throw lures for 2 reasons. 1. Good chance of it netting some fish and some fun. 2. It allowed me to stay mobile, ready to hit the bricks, without having to try to retreive bottom lines.

Tyme is more of diplomat than me. As is the case when ever we are around water for fishing, be aware of your surroundings, know what you will do in advance, and just plain stay alert to have safe fun.

I know that access by foot was shut down for a while for security/construction issues for a while a few years back but since they opened it back up i have been down there many times. i have never had much luck with the Sauger but ive have whacked the white bass / hybrids and several nice catfish. ive caught a few sauger but not as many as i have at the upper dam. last year around the end of september i even caught a few smallmouth on jigs and swim baits.

as far as the area it can be a little rough at times but lately ive noticed you have to press the call button at the gate to get in and out and every now and then there will be a cop riding through there. ive never ran into anyone that made me feel uncomfortable down there ( YET ).

as far as the terrain , it is rough and there is tons of rebarb and huge chunk rocks down there. if you were to fall in and get swept away by the current , forget about it. they would be oulling you out around new albany or greenwood boat ramp. its swift and not a place to play around. i do know that the hydro plant has a few cameras overlooking the area as well. there was a guy who would come down there every day and walk out on the legde in the front of the hydro building and throw a couple lines out baited with shad / skipjack. he would do fairly well but the workers would come out with a loud speaker and tell him to get off the ledge or theyd call the authorities. if he were to fall in right there im sure hed a been fish bait as the turbines on those gates probably would have sucked him in and chopped him up. as with fishing anywhere on the river youve just got to be careful there and use common sense.

if youd ever like to go id be more than happy to meet up with you there and show you what i know about the fishing there it can be good and those hybrids will flat wear ya out if they are schooled up there.
