So after trying for the past few years to up grade a couple of casting rods, looks like this is the year. So my question is-what would be the best actions for 2 all purpose rods? I will be using them for topwater, spinnerbaits, texas rigged plastics, and crankbaits. Pretty sure I will go with at least 7' but not certian on brand so suggestions on that will help also. Thanks as always.
I would go with a MH fast action for the plastics and spinnerbaits, and MH or a M depending on the size of cranks you throw with a moderate action for the cranks. So after trying for the past few years to up grade a couple of casting rods, looks like this is the year. I have a M action Abu Garcia vendetta that hasn't failed me on anything yet. I've literally thrown every type of bait on it and its performed great.
I agree completely with this. As far as brands - Abu Garcia Veritas for both. I have several of these rods and love them.
I would go with GLoomis if I was going to upgrade. If you want cheaper; I love Shimano. For all purpose I would probably stay with something Medium Heavy and Fast or Medium Fast Action.
I have been looking at shimano. I have heard a lot of people say good things about them and the warranty seems excellent, which is a big plus cause I am pretty hard on equipment. Nothing against loomis or garcia. I think a mh with a fast tip and a mh with a mod fast tip should cover everything. Having a little bit of trouble finding a mh/medfast tip. Going to BPS and put my hands on one before I deciede. If I like it i'll probaly order from tackle warehouse cause recently BPS customer service *****.
The new Shimano Cruicials will give you the best bang for the buck....If you can find one of the older 7'2MH extra fast cumara rods, they're the best all around rod I've ever had.....Personally, I'd stay away from the Veritas...I've had several friends to get them and every single one of them have broke...Some have even broke on the cast...If you happen to break a Shimano it's an over the counter warranty, or if you dont have a place close you can cut it in half and **** it back to them and they'll have you a new one in a week....Their warranty can't be touched
As you are looking at rods, I would keep in mind that there will be a difference in the power and actions of rods produced by different companies, which would appear to be the same. To me the action of the Shimano rods seems to be less than other companies. That's not good or bad, just what I perceive. If I were going to buy a new bottom contact rod right now, it would be a Shimano Crucial. I believe they are the best rods in their class. As far as a power fishing rod for cranks and the like, I have a hard time justifying spending a whole lot on a rod where the fish are going to simply load up on it. With that said, I'd go with 1 medium with moderate action and 1 medium heavy fast action. It's kind of tough for me to comment on this subject because I will use multiple different power and action rods for each style of fishing that you have described. Deep, medium, and shallow cranking, size and weight of baits, open water vs. tight quarters, etc. Anyway, my 2 cents.

I do the same; a rod for each application. But I do have a couple rods that though not ideal for a specific application; will work adequately for multiple applications. As for Shimano; I prefer Crucial but hear great things about Cumara and may try one someday. And the life time warranty is great; especially if you are hard on your rods.

Fishin is life is dead on w the 72mhxf cumara. Hands down one of the best all around rods and excels at some techniques. The old ones are actioned a little better but the new ones are great also. As for an all around crankbait rod the one i pick up most of the time is a 7mh mod mojo. Theyre cheap rods but they have a perfect action for med runners and sensitivity is great. For general topwater Id say a 66mhf duckett. Those three rods are just general techniques. The rod Ive found in my hand most the time though is the 68mhxf glx. Next to that would be the 71hf glx.
If youre on a budget and just looking for two rods. Id go w a crucial 72mhxf and a mojo 7mh-mod. You could make those rods work for most situations. 7:1 chronarch or curado on crucial w 15# flouro on crucial. 6.4:1 old 200e citica on mojo. 10# flouro would be better for cranking but to cover the topwater you could use 10# mono so you could throw topwater too. Prob work alright.
A couple Shimano Clarus rods. Lot of last years models marked down now & the new ones are usually around $89.00. They have the lifetime over the counter warranty just like the rest of them. 7Ft.mhvy. for spinnerbaits & plastics & a 7ft or 7'6" medium for crankbaits. I used a 7'6" heavy for jigs & 20lb mono or 65Lb braid for a few years now & have never had a problem, but when & if I do I can take it back & get a new one on the spot just like the other Shimanos. No company beats Shimanos warranty.
