    Lures on an Airplain?

Can you carry them on with you? I have a work visitor from out of the country who is interested in fishing. I was going to send some crank baits and Jigs with him to take home. He is not planning on checking any baggage (only carry on). Anyone hae any experience?

Several years ago I was flying to Washington State and planed on doing a little fishing while i was there. On the way out the door I seen two 3/4 oz Rattle Traps on the table, I just picked them up on stuck them in my pocket, not thinking it would be a problem. I checked in my bags and went thru the scanners, these people had no idea what I had and was told I could not take them on board a plane. I had to explane what they was and wanted to know why I had them in my pocket. They seen the hooks and decided nope and took them away from me, but I was told I could take them back to my truck, but I stood a chance of missing my flight. Today I wonder did someone just want my Crome and Blue Rattle Traps or did they just not no what it was. So answer to your question 5 years ago you could not flying out of Louisville.

It does not really say anything other than fragile flies "should be" carried on. If It were me carrying on Flies I would print out that page along with the address and take it with me. Regular lures who knows. It may be up to the people on site which seems to be a roll of the dice. If you think about it, even with 6 ought treble hooks, how much damage can one do. With the barb they are only good for one stick and they you can't really control the person.

A few years ago at the airport I ran back to the baggage check in counter so I could put a cigar cutter I had forgotten to put in my baggage in my bag. When I got there the lady asked what I was doing. I told her and she said, oh, you can take cigar cutters. A cigar cutter is basically two "utility knife" blades set in opposing directions in a flimsy plastic case that when bent the blades pop out. Go figure! Maybe the folks in Washington like to travel with their Cubans. You always hear a those smokey back rooms.

...or it depends it the TSA official thinks that lure is catchin anything where you are goin. "You can take the rattle trap but not the purple worm". Ha Ha.

I've flown with fishing tackle, lures and everything else lots of times. If you check them in it's not an issue. Use TSA approved locks on your baggage, more times than not they will inspect it because the equipment looks fishy to them on the scanners. Understandable, anything with lead content makes them think you're trying to hide something. If your locks are not TSA approved they will cut them off, but the approved ones they will open with their master key.

If you carry-on fishing equipment they may of may not let you take things they are not familar with. They have a lot of descretion they can use at the checkpoints. If something is iffy to them it may wind up being a matter of whether the Officer likes the way you look or not. I've attended security seminars conducted by TSA officials about "reading" peoples body motions, most of their Officers can tell your intentions without a word being spoken. Kind of like our mothers could do.

If the equipment looks fishy is that a pun intended?

I had a money clip my daughter gave me that had a small knife blade on the side I was told I could not take it aboard the plane. They told me where I could purchase an envelope at one of the news stand type stores and there was a stamp machine just outside the store I got out of line purchased the envelope and addressed it to myself and the stamp machine did not work so I ended up throwing the clip away and hurried back to the security line I was worried I would miss the flight. I should have dropped it in the mail box with out postage to see if they would have delivered it and dunned me for the postage but I was not thinking very well at the time.

You might have a box with postage addressed to you where he could send them to you if he can not take them aboard the plane or just send them to his home address.

I used to take all of my fly fishing things on board with me, but as previously stated it really depends on the local TSA to make the call. Since 9/11 I check everything, and always someone goes through the bag. It is easiest to have it in a good container right on top so they don't mess everything else up digging for it.
As also mentioned, it is sometimes easier to just send it in the mail.
I have found that by taking a few fly boxes, renting gear if possible, and buying local on trips makes everything easier.
