The earned income credit does turn out to be a win-fall for some low income earners with kids but for the life of me I don't understand why we give this credit, not sure what it cost in tax dollars and from what I have seen of it, the folks who get it for the most part just wizz it away, it seems to serve very little purpose, folks who get it buy video games, new cell phones and every other kind of toy with it... I know several people who get this credit and know of very little practical use it serves.

Earned income buys GREAT big freakin big screen TV's for folks who have never EARNED a **** thing.

You know what......I make pretty **** good money and don't have a 46 in flat screen........

Give these folks a windfall does nothing but KEEP them on the program. Give them nothing, tell them to get their azz to work and WORK MORE to support their families.

If they have to work 80 or 90 hours a week at 2 or 3 jobs......SO WHAT. People did it for years. People STILL do it.

I'm tired if giving money to folks. TIRED.

Well to say I'm surprised by this post is an understatement. I misjudged you on this one.

They do have to actually work to to qualify for the credit, it is based on their earned income but it is called a refundable credit, even if nothing was taken out of their income as tax whatever the credit is is given to them.

Actually this has been discussed here before, most of you guys who seem to be hard to the right kinda get something akin to horse blinder as far as your opinion of folks who have a different point of view than yourself... I personally believe we are a better country than we were 60 or so years ago and I believe that is a result of the food stamp and other assistance programs that makes it less of a struggle for folks who actually need assistance even though there is a lot of abuse of the 'freebies' as you guys like to call it.

Better than 60 years ago........better how?

We sure have more debt. we also have significantly more unemployment. Have a lot more people who rely on the gubment instead of themselves.

    Yea, we're definitely better off.

Well all you have to do is substitute "right" with the word "left" and I believe I could have posted that line. We will have to disagree on why our country is a better place. I believe in the last 60 years small business and technology made us a better country. Gubment handouts didn't do it.
No one argues that some people need help. I just say that with so much abuse why do we continue to make more programs that can be abused? It has to stop or we will be like Europe in so many ways. It's easy for folks like yourself to say help the needy even though there is abuse who cares just give them more more more. Ok, as a country lets do that. Now what? We have more people sukking off the gubment than we have paying in??? Isn't that where we are headed? At some point don't we stop the madness??
I know we all get some relief from taxes and without it things would be more rough and tough than they are but I just don't seem to mind as much when people are actually putting their time in. Abuse, neglect and entitlement attitudes are killing this country and attitudes like yours enables this. You seem to believe that since we can't stop the abuse lets continue feeding the system. I tend to believe we stop giving away so much and make people do for themselves. Sure it's going to be hard but if we don't start correcting this now we are in deep doodoo. How do we correct it? I don't know but we have so called leaders who should be working on this instead of gun control and global warming...hahaha I managed to get that in there!!

Yes we have more debt, not sure what unemployment numbers were back then, better in that we have fewer folks living with hunger and other things associated with poverty, not everybody has the ability to provide for themselves and we are a better country in that we are better at helping people who can't help themselves... We do have a good many people who won't provide for themselves and take advantage of the system but I believe the good outweighs the bad as far as government assistance goes... Even the folks who earn their living are living better than we were 60 years ago, we have lots of toys that were not as easy to afford 60 years ago, not sure where that will lead in the future but as of today we live fairly well.

Until we come up with someway to separate the needy from the losers, I really don't see how we can stop assistance without putting a lot of people out in the cold, hungry without the ability to do anything about it... The welfare losers won't starve or freeze because if all else fails they will provide for themselves but not everybody who gets assistance has that option... I seriously doubt you or anybody else here would tolerate a government that allowed kids to go hungry, regardless of who those kids belonged to.
