I was just thinking that it could be fun to tag a few catfish and see if anyone catches them again. I guess i am just board this winter!!!
I dont know if it is legal but I know a guy that did a noteworthy tagging operation on the Ohio River. He was studying sauger. I forget specifically he was looking for but he learned quite a bit. He may have marked the fiish in some way without putting an actual tag on the fish...long time ago, can't remember.
It's legal to tag a fish if you give them a five second head start.
Seriously, if the regs for a particular species says they have to be released unharmed or in the best condition possible I'd say it would be illegal to tag them. Otherwise, I would lean toward notching a fin or something before I'd insert a tag.
[I] don't think it would be illegal to tag a fish. What diffenence does it make. If you aren't tagging them you would probably eat them. Once caught they are your property and what you do with them is your business. If you are sparing their life and not harming them what is the big deal putting a tag on them. With this said I am sure there is some GOVERNMENTAL REGULATION that says no tagging ...control freaks at it again.
I tried to by a high tech tagging system for Stripers on Lake Cumberland and was told it was highly illegal unless with a conservation club of some kind which also needs permission. With that being said the stripers are a regulated stocked fish, so that may be different then non stocked fish.
The company I was buying it from, said it was illegal so I called Core of Engineers and they told me I was not allowed to and there would be a fine per fish if someone were to get caught doing it.
The best way is to contact the game and fish deptment in the area that you are thinking about tagging. The COE does not have anything to say about the fishing regs. in the lake. That is regulated by the game and fish so if they tell you what to do concerning fishing is not nessasary the law.
