While I've never dealt with any French companies I have had some dealing with a manufacturer in Barcelona, Spain.
I was having dinner with the company's director of engineering on a Sunday evening. We were discussing work hours and so forth. I'd said that I went into work before 7:00 AM and generaly worked until around 5:30 or so with a half an hour to an hour for lunch. He told me there hours were about the same.

In reality the top execs met at a restaurant for breakfast around 7:30 to 8:00. They finally went to the office around 9:00 or 9:30. They then worked til 11:15 or so then drove as much as 45 minutes to their restaurant dujour. Lunch lasted 2 to 3 hours including a lot of wine. They then worked another hour or two then went home.

Keep in mind they also got all of August off for holiday and had another 20+ paid holidays.

I don't have any idea how most european companies/countries will survive in this world economy. I will say my experience with Germans is a lot better. They do actually work.

They don't survive.......most EU countries have economies worse than ours, and most will not recover.

Americans work harder than most.......but not all......there are 9 or 10 countries that work harder, but Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and most of the EU are not on that list.

I have to say I have a different opinion on the Germans. When I was stationed there for two years I was amazed at how many days off they had. I was also surprised by the military and their ability to drink while on duty. Who knows maybe things have changed. This was back in the 80's.

I haven't trusted them since they bombed Pearl Harbor...

    LOL

I guess that's an issue, since I'm of German heritage.
