The rods, if in the box may not be "straight" when you get them back out of the box, after leaving them flat, or bent in the box for the winter.

Same thing with leaning them in the corner.......bad news.

Good point. I actually built a rod holder on the wall years ago that hold my rods. I never leave them jacked up in the corner and I don't have a rod locker on my grizz.

Something I have seen is people who leave them in their cars in a bent position. Or wind them down till the rod tip is bent. That isn't good either. Plus winding them down tight like that is hard on your drag system after leaving that way for a while.

I'd check your drag on each before using. Drag discs expand and cause more drag. I try to remember to loosen mine up every time anyway.

I Always Leave Mine In The Boat Year Round

It sets covered outside & have never had a problem with my rods whatsoever. I'm with Embry on this one. Don't sweat it as it's no big deal. If that bothered your rods they probably wouldn't last through a few of the hard hook sets that most of us do in my opinion. However there's nothing wrong with getting them out in winter if it makes you feel better. Some do & some don't. To each their own

Would it make a difference if the rod is carbon fibre or glass fibre?

My old tracker didn't have as good of rod lockers........and I DEFINITELY messed up the first couple loomis rods I had that way. My new boat, maybe not so much, but it is definitely a prob...just not always.

If The Boat Is Covered In Winter

With a good water proof (not weather or water resistant) tarp it won't be a problem.I keep all of mine in my boat fiberglass cranking rods included & have never had a problem. If looking for something cheap for a waterproof tarp so you don'y have to worry google used bill board tarps. Very cheap alternative to hundreds of dollars for a top notch boat cover for storage in winter weather.
