    Bill Dance

I don't know how anyone that is a fisherman can be critical of that letter.

They way I read the article it sounds like it wasn't he, but someone else that released his letter, so really we don't know how he feels about it being made public. Maybe he is embarrassed that it was released publicly, or maybe he OK'd it's release and his true motive was self serving. IMO it is hard to criticize someones motives without knowing the facts.

That said IMHO he is a fisherman that has every right to his opinion, and also every right to use whatever influence he has trying to sway the outcome. People do it every day in this country.

My point exactly, given his propensity for calamity, Bill appears to be a poor representative to talk about how to act prudently in a boat. Anywhere. And given his history of "close encounters of the water kind", how would we see his comments about fishing safely in potentially hazardous conditions as coming from an authoritative source with a demonstrated history of safety.

I prefer to take advice on boating safety from those with a worthy record. Bill is no doubt a great angler, but no less a boating "doofess".

I don't know how anyone who has seen Bill Dance Bloopers could be critical of one that questions his advice on boating safety matters.

LOL, I do see your point. However I like the fact that the guy obviously doesn't take himself too seriously and can laugh at himself. He never had to release those bloopers, and my guess is if anyone of us who spent as many hours doing something for a living as he did and taped it all, we would all have a bloopers work tape available to edit.

Regardless I don't believe that it precludes him from being allowed to express his opinion.

Agreed with the right to voice an opinion. If I was swaying opinion to support cancer research, I doubt I'd employee a cigarette industry spokesman as a representative. Francesco Schettino's, (skipper Costa Concordia) resume for the position of Corporate Safety Spokesman is similarly unlikely to be well recieved at Carnival Cruise Lines. But, he sure has the right to make the application.

That is a valid point, and his letter very well may be received as such. I really only take exception to concluding that his motive was for personal gain when we don't even know if he even wanted it released to the public. However it is not really a big deal, and as usual I enjoyed reading your point of view on a topic.

Good point and I plead guilty for the assumption.

Wow...been along time since I apologized for "assumption" instead of "consumption".

Let's look at the bright side - it could have been worse. It could have been that world class deer hunter Jimmy Houston. Talk about lack of credibility!!

I agree. Ever since I saw video of him hunting, so called, in a three acre enclosure in Indiana I have lost all respect for him.

HURRICANEBOB, let me ask you a question if I may. Which celebrity fisherman do you respect the most? My intention in asking you this is not to open a can of worms on you but just to get your opinion.

My favorite is Peter Miller, the host of Bass 2 Billfish. Hank Parker would be second.

I tend to favor saltwater over freshwater fishing shows. I have no favorite shows, but the one's you mentioned, now that I think of it, I find factual and not over embelished. I prefer fishing shows that are factual without being so full of hype that they they lose their credibility. Any show that keeps it real is fine by me, the folks that make too much of what they got just make me flip channels. "Show-me" kinda guy, not a tell me then try to find a way to take too little and make it what you want me to believe it is. Tis what it Tis.

Apologize for the slow response. Just missed the post, my bad. I'll buy the beer to make it up
