    Porblems with Steering Cables

I have a tracker tundra and steering the boat has become very difficult. I do not think the cables have broke. There is not a grease fitting on the bars and I tried some wd-40 to loosen up the steering, but that did not seem to help. Any suggestions on what the problem maybe?

I had a boat do this to me several years back and it was a spring inside the steering box behind the steering wheel. When yo turn the boat 1 way or anoter the spring would expand or contract. Over time the spring got rusty and failed and the boat would not hardly turn 1 way or another. It would just make a popping sound and be very difficult to turn the wheel like no power steering in a car. I went to the marine store and for $140 and a couple hours I fixed it myself with a new steering box. I just took the old part off and took it up there for a replacement. Make sure you route the cables the right way when I took the boat out I steered right and went left.

Just got done replacing mine. My problem was a broken gear.

But you should have grease fittings on the clamp portion of your outboard. These lube the bar that attaches to the linkage on your OB. Under your console you will have either a rotary mechanism or a rack and pinion mechanism.

On the rotary the "extra" cable can be lubed with marine grease by removing the tube from the helm and hand packing grease onto the cable. after greasing screw back on the over travel tube.

On the R&P steering I can't help you much but I bet you can get in there and grease it up.

Also down on the clamp part of your ob I bet you have a grease zerk that lubes the spindle that the motor turns around. Mine is on the starboard side on the underside of the motor. I had to raise it all the way up to get to it good.
