Fished the Barren River yesterday and my wife hooked her first musky on a 7.5 inch crankbait. The musky put up a heck of a fight and went all around the boat and under the boat. Finally landed it and snapped a couple of pictures and then released it. A nice sized 39 inch river musky.
That was the only fish we caught.

That is awesome! it is nice that you fish together.
If you don't mind me asking, where do you put in on Barren River? Could I use a 16' V Hull aluminum boat w/ outboard in the river, or do you need to stick with a flatter John boat bottom?
Most usually, I put in at Boat Landing Road, but I have put in at a lot of different places. The type/size of boat that you could use, depends upon the river level. You can check the river level at :
USGS Current Conditions for Kentucky_ Streamflow
If the Barren River level at Bowling Green is at about 8.5 foot or higher, yes you could use a 16' V Hull and go either upstream or downstream of the ramp at Boat Landing Road. If the water level is at about 7 foot or so, I would probably only go downstream with a V Hull. I've taken a bass boat up and down Barren River at the 8.5 foot level. You could also put in at the ramp off of Old Louisville Road and go upstream away from the spot where the water goes over the rocks.
Thanks so much for the info. Are the ramps decent there?
What about that ramp off of Barren River Road? I have passed that at times and seen trailers parked there. Is that ramp OK, and is the area deep enough as well? I have never been in the river so really don't have a clue.
Sweet.
Nice fish and release Esox!
