On our fishing trip on Friday I had a few obstacles in launching the boat. At the turn in to the New Albany ramp there was a car parked way up on the ramp where one straightens the truck/trailer just before backing down.
He/she was right where I wanted to be. I avoided that obstacle only to see another car parked on the Indiana side of the ramp where I needed to launch the boat. It was a work out for me in reversing in an S pattern to traverse from left to right and back to the left and again to the right. @#&**@
A male occupant was just sitting there messing about with an i-pad type devise oblivious to the world around him. I could understand if he wanted a nice view of the river and the scenery but geez Louise, what the hell are you doing here at the bottom of the ramp?? There are better places for you to play with your wingding.
I thought about educating these ramp squatters but I was anxious to fish and I wasn't concealed carrying. Life is too short to sweat the small things.
When we returned to the ramp I once again encountered a ramp squatter. A young lad of about 20 or so was parked on the Kentucky side of the ramp at the waters edge.I did notice that he had a fishing pole in the water. While I was preparing to jump out of the bow and proceed on foot up the ramp to retrieve my rig he moved his vehicle to the exact spot I needed to place the trailer in the water. I very politely told him he was fine where he was before but not to where he moved his car.
He was very apologetic and then moved backed to his previous location.
Once I retrieved my boat, I stopped at the water's edge to drain my live wells and offered him the left over shad we had. He was very grateful for the bait.
Another peeve. Why do cars park in the tow vehicle/trailer spots? When we arrived there was a truck parked in the prime spot with no trailer. Hey you moron!! There are a ton of parking places so why do you have to take one of the few vehicle/trailer spots. Grrrrrrr.
I realize that the ramps are "Public" but I just get peeved when the idiot public want to squat in the way of boaters wanting to launch and retrieve. Gol dangit, the ramps are ramps, not parking places.
I feel better now that my harrumph is over.
This is a change.....when a ramp issue comes up its usually folks who load and unload gear on the ramp as opposed to the staging areas! No doubt some people just don't understand what they are doing. Sounds like you handled it well though. On our fishing trip on Friday I had a few obstacles in launching the boat. Tyme there is a guy that is camped on the ramp..IND. side about every other Fri. night with lanterns out...GGRRRR. I can't stand it,hard as he!! to see the ramp and judge running your boat up on it. The guy has some sort of speech problem and I end up feelin sorry for him and given him my left over bait. I just wish he understood what he's doing..I to have done the S pattern trying to retrieve my boat, where's the DNR for these guy's.OK there's my rantOn our fishing trip on Friday I had a few obstacles in launching the boat. Hey Chuck tell him about that big ole snake he might not sit there anymore, lol..
As I am the one that always loads the boats I can`t say much but YOU TELL UM BOYS! Back when i could walk the ramps I`ve been cussing them just like you all!
He may just not know any better. The next time you see him and give him bait, explain the proper etiquette in a casual conversation with him.Tyme there is a guy that is camped on the ramp..IND. side about every other Fri. night with lanterns out...GGRRRR. If he still does it, well then beat the carp out of him. It's not like he can tell anyone with his speech problem.Oooh I'm bad for even thinking that!!
You said the P-word..."Public"...far too many of them are moronic inconsiderate self-serving assholes.
Back over them once with the trailer and they'll learn.
That's why I'd like to drive an old C-series Blazer with a pipe bumper on the front, but I'd probably lose my insurance in a week...lol
What got me, was the guy who back down, uncover the boat, load the gear, talk to the driver of the boat, and then go park the rig.Just as bad as the the "boat detailer" who wiped his rig down, and puts the cover on and then pulls out, but not anymore, no boat no problems.
I'm with you, I'd like to just head down the ramp, and pity be on any idiot with his head up his ass. "Oh, I'm sorry, my vision isn't so good, and besides, I didn't expect anybody to be parked RIGHT ON THE **** RAMP!"You said the P-word..."Public"...far too many of them are moronic inconsiderate self-serving assholes.

I have the very same problem at Bluegrass where I like to fish. Some people park their trucks and boat trailers right in-line with the boat ramp making it hard to pull up enough to get your trailer straight before starting to back down the ramp. The parking lot is so small that it often fills up quickly on weekends. There are two parking spots that are at the top of the ramp area that interfere with people launching their boats. Now I can still launch my boat there but I have to start with my trailer at an angle which makes it harder to back down the ramp.
We also have a lot of sight seeing public without boat trailers that take up parking spaces. And the Evansville Bike Club had a few members that park their vehicles on the parking lot for fishermen and hunters and leave them there for several hours while they go out and bike ride on the area's roads.
Then there are the people with small boats that they haul in the back of a pickup truck. Kayaks, canoes and small john boats. They will park in the ramp and then unload their car or truck for 15 mintues then drag their boats out of the pickup truck while parked right at the water's edge. I guess they have a right to be there too but they do take a lot of time unloading and reloading everything. Why can't they do most of this in the parking lot and then it would take less time to launch while parked on the ramp itself?
It's just a common courtesy thing that some people just don't think about others at the ramp. It's good that those are the minority and most of the boaters are courteous and thoughtful at the ramp.
I often run into people who park at the edge fo the water right by the ramp and then proceed to fish at the ramp with their lawn chair parked right in the middle of the concrete ramp at the water's edge. Last night I ran into one such older man. The kicker was that he was deaf and dumb. Meaning he could not hear or speak. I just went to another launch ramp where two good looking galls were setup with their lawn chairs at the water's edge on the launch ramp. I left there as well. Went to the other ramps and each one had people fishing on the launch ramp out of lawn chairs.
And this was all on a Monday Night when the air temps were cooler than normal. It was only about 65 deg F last evening.
Why do I feel guilty when I make someone move their lawn chairs or stop fishing so that I can launch my boat? I'll never figure that one out. Perhaps it's because I like most other people like to avoid confrontations at the ramp.
