I'm not a very good fisherman. So for me, even catching a bluegill is fun and a big deal! But today I caught my biggest bass ever at Lusby Lake in Georgetown. And to make it even more awesome it was with my baitcaster, which I have admittedly struggled to use.
I have fished Lusby Lake (and the Scott County Park lake) quite a few times and have little success at either. But today I tried a new strategy and fished a section of Lusby Lake where I could easily cast into what I presume is the deepest part of this little lake. Mainly to avoid all the algae or moss (whatever it is). At first I tried some small inline spinners on ultralight tackle, hoping to catch a bluegill or a trout. No luck. So I figured I would then practice the baitcaster before it got dark. I did not anticipate catching a single thing. But regardless, I Texas rigged a 7" Berkley power worm (tequila sunrise color) on a 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG with a small bullet weight. First cast was a mess and I birdsnested the whole thing. Took me a couple of minutes to fix that. But I didn't get discouraged. Second cast, birdsnested it again! Worked on fixing it again and then checked the brakes on my Shimano Caenan. They were all off for some reason. So I put all but two on and then cast again and success! Right where I wanted it and no birdsnest! I then made several more casts and made some subtle changes to my retrieve each time, altering speed, etc. Made another cast, began a slow retrieve and BAM! Something big hit it! Except I had forgotten to adjust the drag on my baitcaster! The drag was far too tight. But I managed to set the hook and reel the big ol' fish in. And it was a beautiful largemouth bass. Biggest I've ever caught by far. Now, this fish may pale in comparison to some of the bass you guys pull out of the water but I was ecstatic (and still am)!
Here are a few photos I took with my camera:
