I was trolling shiners. My fish finder was showing surface clutter down 30 to 40 feet making it hard to read but it appeared the active fish were between 20 to 30 feet. The first day most of the hits came around 25 feet deep. The second day it was closer to 20 feet deep. The last hit of the day came around 10:30am with full sun over head and it hit a shiner at only 15 feet. I've never seen them hit that shallow, in warm water, and with direct sun.
Had I checked my bait I'm sure I could have limited out earlier. I baited the lines at 5:30 and replaced the shiners on the lines that got hit. We had 3 by 8:30 and I was out of bait. At 10:30 when I pulled in all my lines I had two dead shiners and everything else was empty hooks. I was running 3 plainer boards on each side a balloon rig and a couple down rods.
Thanks for the info Adam. I may try stripers again the next time I go down.
