I'm going to repair my live well and I just bought some marine-tex. Anyone ever use this, if so and have any tips I would be a apprecative.
Hi,
I've used marine tex to fix a few things and it works very well. Just follow the instructions and don't mix/use too much at once -- it can harden before you are done.
But, without knowing the specifics of your livewell problem, it may be better to use fiberglass. If you need to cover/fix a larger area, I could see using some sheets of fiberglass cloth and resin would give a better result and be "easier". Again, I don't know "exactly" what the problem is so it is hard to actually provide feedback.
I've made a few repairs to my now very old boat using both. MB Tex worked well for little patches/holes/dings. Fiberglass worked better in a couple areas where I needed to fix some rotted areas (the big sheets of fiberglass cloth laid in place nicely and the resin covered and formed a nice bond -- pretty much good as new).
But MB Tex is good stuff that works well and does what it is advertised to do.
Good luck,
Jeff
Marine Tex is good stuff. I don't know what size you bought. but the paste, hardener ratio is very important. If you are not using the entire amount, it's more difficult to get the proper ratio. After it cures, you can sand it if necessary.
I had about an 8 inch long crack. I bought a 2oz container it said to use all of the hardener. I put it on yesterday evening. It went on very smooth and fairly easy. I checked it this morning as I left for work and it looks and feels like its been welded. I've not put water in it yet but it appears that its going to hold good. Thanks for all the response and info.
