"which is nearly impossible" there's the rub... the word has been used and used and used, without it's hurtfulness being diluted. But I will say this: personally, I rarely say the phrase, "the n-word." I think that just gives the word even more power. I never call people niggers, whether they're present or not; that's just not the way I think. But, if I'm talking about the word, I generally just use the word. It is, after all, just a word, and I don't care if anybody thinks I'm a racist because I don't refuse to utter it.
Oh and BTW.. I obviously had my dates a little off. It wasn't the late 50's, it was the early 60's. He makes a reference to "President Kennedy..."
