Has anyone out there tried the navionics app for your smartphone? I was wondering about accuracy and whether it used data or not. It looks pretty good for $10.00 and it may hold me over until I can get a gps unit for my boat.

I used it for about 4 months and it worked fine for marking key spots. It would be good also for those really foggy nights when you can't really see, but in my experience it is not that good for high speed travel. A buddy and I used it on lake guntersville to keep on channels that were not marked and it payed off good. Hope this helps.
You won't be sorry for 10 bucks
It is AWESOME.......simply AWESOME.
AND if you have an ipad or android tablet, you can get that version and have an even bigger screen. AND once you move up to the bigger unit, anything you setup in community edits, will show up on your new model.
I use the navionics app when I'm in Canada for navigating in the boundary waters. It works AWESOME there too.
Best 10 bucks I ever spent.

Thanks for the input. I bought it and it looks great. I can't wait to get to the lake.
What everybody else said! It's great, not only for navigation and marking spots, but if you just want to study a map wherever you're at to help plan your next fishing trip.
Try fishidy. It's free and very good
I tried fishidy. Problem was when I was in the middle of the lake I was getting no phone signal so it wouldn't load the lakes map. Any of you have that problem?
FYI you can download the map of a lake at home this is supposed to help if you can't get a service.
I was going to get it but it looks more like its fifty bucks. This is all that came up in the app store.
...just double checked. Ten bucks for a phone. Fifty bucks for an ipad.
