Im with you on that, I spend my money with small local shops, cost me a little more money, but these stores don't damage the economy like the big guys (walmart) the best vote you can cast is with your dollar, everybody pays attention.
Wish I had a $1 for every time I heard of a carrot stick breaking.
Those rods are a joke. People laugh at me for this, but of all the rods I have currently and of all I have owned previously, an Abu Garcia Black Max combo is by far one of the best I ever had. I have had the 150.00 gloomis ans st. Croix rods and a little abuse just ruins them. My bmax combo had been put through the ringer and it continues to produce with authority. Those Abu Garcia Vendetta rods are good too for the $$$. All in all I think these big name fancy rods are just a lure to get peoples money.

The loomis and St. Croix high dollar rods are not a gimmick....a lighter more sensitive rod, which they without question are, will most assuredly enable you to detect more bites when using baits that require feel. i learned this lesson on St. Clair when comparing a cheap rod to a GLX spinning rod...catch rate was 3 to 1 with the GLX all because you could feel the bite.
X2 on the loomis ......after i use my loomis rods if i pick something else up it feel like i am fishing with a fencepost. i am pretty partial to my garcias....but theyre not even close. the crucials are very very nice very sensitive rods as well. but everytime i get i hit on a g loomis rod it feels like the fish swam up and punched me in the arm !The loomis and St. Croix high dollar rods are not a gimmick....a lighter more sensitive rod, which they without question are, will most assuredly enable you to detect more bites when using baits that require feel. i learned this lesson on St. Clair when comparing a cheap rod to a GLX spinning rod...catch rate was 3 to 1 with the GLX all because you could feel the bite.
i have carrot stiks and they are ok, i have never had one break on stripers or anything else for that matter, but they get heavy and are not very sensitive in my opinion.
Except with those high end rods, like G.Loomis and Cumara, you get FANTASTIC and I mean FANTASTIC customer service. Those rods are a joke. With Cumara, over the counter lifetime with a receipt. If no receipt, send back to Shimano and the repair or replace for FREE, and pay the shipping back.
With G. Loomis, 100 dollar expeditor......no questions asked, they overnight you a new rod. If you don't want to spend the expediter money, then send it back, and the will repair or replace. I have a bronzeback that the finish was peeling off. This bronzeback is 9 yrs old. They replace it......
You definitely get what you pay for.
Later,
Geo
