This morning I had the oil changed in my work SUV.....2012 Kia Sorrento. We use the company that did the work for most of our maintenance needs and oil changes and they normally do a great job.
Well I'm driving home and I'm hearing what sounds like a rattle every time I accelerate so I bring my window down and listen and it sounds like valves knocking and about that time I get a phone call from the job site electrician I just left saying I left a trail of oil out of the parking lot! I turned onto a side road, turned the engine off and opened the hood and WOW! Oil was all over the place!! I checked the oil level on the dipstick and it was dry....I called the company we use and he was very sorry and sent his main man out to see what damage had been done and how to fix the situation.
What happened is that on the Kia Sorrento they don't use the standard metal canister filter this uses a replaceable paper filter that is located at the top of the engine and kept in place with a composite cap. That cap needs a gasket/oil ring which makes the cap oil tight....it was missing!
The new filter he brought had a separate plastic bag with this ring in it that had apparently been tossed in the garbage by mistake on the original oil change. Once he installed everything properly and put 4.5quarts of oil in the SUV all was good. It sounds good at idle and during acceleration so I think all is well. It's odd I didn't smell oil burning on the engine block or exhaust manifold.
Anyway....I am taking it back in the morning so they can clean the engine and then to a car wash to clean the oil on the back end of the vehicle and the under carriage. The whole back end is covered in oil and since its a pearl white metal flake it shows up pretty good. What a day......btw they handled it like professionals so no ill feelings towards them. A new guy made the mistake and it was just lucky we caught it.....stuff happens and how it's handled says more about the people who made the mistake than the mistake itself.
