I want to give everyone the latest report on my son, Mike, who had surgery to remove a large tumor from inside his heart. It was located attached to the right and left ventricles (I think that's what they are called) where they come together to make an artery. He had surgery at University of AL Birmingham Hospital last Thursday and arrived at recovery room about 6 pm. Dr. Brunsting removed 75% of the right ventricle and some of the left. The holes were patched with a material that would attach itself and grow tissue to fill the holes. At 8 pm he was rushed back to surgery with a blood clot in his heart where the tumor had been removed. We received calls from his nurse saying, "Pray, pray, pray. Mike has a blood clot and we will be opening all the surgery he's just had. His condition is critical." Imagine having major surgery twice in the same day.
We had been praying for him since three days before the surgery. Dr. Brunsting told us the strangest thing had happened in Mike's heart. The golf ball size tumor had lost its blood supply and was just sitting there slowly drying up. The fluid around his heart was bloody water that appeared to have drained from around the tumor. I believe in miracles and Mike had received a big one.
The doctor told us that he was going to place Mike into a deeper sleep than he was in during surgery, for 24 hours. It was to keep him from coughing or sneezing and possibly tearing some sutures loose. Well, at 4 am he scared the crap out of his nurse. He opened his eyes and said, "I want a glass of sweet tea, some food, and bring me my underwear." She sweetly explained why he had to wait until his digestive system was awake that it had been temporarily paralyzed from the anesthesia and he would start vomiting. He got an extra blanket to cover his cold butt. That night he had his glass of sweet tea, a bowl of chicken broth, and some Jello.
The next day they placed him in a chair to sit up for a while. The next day, he first sat in a chair and then they gave him a short walk down the hall. When he got back to his room, he went down and they had to push the oxygen tubes through his nose and down into his lungs. Yesterday he was taken to a private room, his oxygen was taken off, he sat up, walked a couple of times with assistance, and had solid food for his meals, and his glass of sweet tea. He was doing well last night and his voice was strong. We hope to get results of his biopsy and lab tests today. We're continuing to pray for him until we know that he doesn't have cancer and he is completely well. He said to tell everyone on Fishin.com that he thanks you for all the prayers that are helping him through this tough time. I thank each of you, also.
