I wonder how old a 96 pound catfish might be? In reading the article it said it took 30 minutes to boat the fish...I guess it must have fought decently, but it seems to make sense to me the older the fish the less fight they have in them. The fish was definitely large in comparison to the guy who had his picture taken with it.
Chub with alot of fish the older the less they fight not true most of the ttime with big cats. When those whiskered rascals get over 50# they take on a whole new meaning, believe me I've layed witness to it. Just from shear size and weight alone it's a WOW experience. I've netted several for Chuck that were over 45lb with the biggest 60# and a little change, they are mean I tell ya plum mean. Personal best is a 42lb and 5oz fish and it was fun, can't imagine what this 96 must have been like.I wonder how old a 96 pound catfish might be? Man catching a big cat in the current is awesome! They feel twice as big when they got that on their side.![]()
For the people that release large cats in private ponds, I assume they are more like private lakes correct?
Your average farm pond will not sustain a 96# blue for long for a few reasons. Food and temperature primarily.
Wasnt the former world record blue from the Ohio at like 104#s?
I thought the record was over 100 lbs but the article says 57lbs was the old record but man I know there has to be a 100 plus in that river I remember as a kid being told that divers working around meldahl dam were leary of diving there because they seen a catfish the size of a voltswagen down there.
I think those big fish are worth tons of money to places like Bass Pro Shops. I bet they'll scoop it out of that pond and sell it before long.
If remember correctly that 104 lber died being shipped to a store like BPS.
Thats an impressive fish for sure.
Bruce Midkiff of Owensboro, I think he has since passed away, caught the 104 lber that was the state and world record for a while. You can see a replicia mount of it at Frank Miller and Sons sporting goods in Owensboro. I thought that they released that 104 back into the river here near Owensboro. It is a huge fish. Also anyone ever watch that show on I think Discovery, about river monsters, he catches some huge cats on that show.

Tim Pruitt caught the new world record blue cat. This Mississippi River brute weighed in at 124lbs. was 58" long and 44" around!
The 104 lber was the KY record and caught three pools down. Ohio just reinstated the blue cat record last year which is one reason why the previous record was so low. 96 pounds is absolutely huge for the Markland pool and about 30 pounds heavier than me or my other Markland pool cat junkies have ever heard of being caught (out of this pool).
There are several pay-lakes in Ohio with 100+ lb blues in them though.
