I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION IN MY AREA OF KENTUCKY THAT IS TAKING A STEP IN THE CONSERVATION OF OUR WATERWAYS. I INCLUDED A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANAZATION AND IT'S BACKGROUND AS WELL AS AN UPCOMING EVENT TO HELP IN THE EFFORTS.

    Objective

    Background
Friends of Stoner Creek (FOSC) was formed in September 2007 largely in response to serious ongoing problems with duckweed and other nuisance aquatic plants. Their concerns have grown rapidly to include recreation, tourism, economic concerns, wildlife preservation, public health and saftey aspects accosciated with Stoner Creek and its watershed.

The group's membership has growns as it has conducted educational meetings and sponsored creek awareness activities. The (FOSC) was officially incorporated as a non-profit orginization in April 2008. Efforts are underway to obtain a federal grant for studying environmental quality and other water concerns along the entire Stoner Creek corridor. These citizens were inspired by the Strodes Creek Conservancy, led by former Winchester Mayor Dodd Dixon. FOSC understands that Stoner Creek is an amentiy to the citizens of Paris and Bourbon County. Its members are dedicated to preserving and improving the waterway and its tribuatries.

Friends of Stoner Creek has the strong backing of the State's Division of Water and the Licking River Regional Office. The organization looks to create strong partnerships with Paris City Council and the Bourbon County Fiscal Court and any other civic organization with a similar mission.

Hey this is a pretty cool thing you all have going. I have always wanted to participate in something like, the Ohio River Sweep for instance, but never have because either I didn't know about the date ahead of time or I didn't have time to do it or whatever.

    Thanks for posting this information.

i am glad to post this and i am glad that people in my community care enough about our main water source to put together a group like this. I hope that maybe other communities will take the steps to do the same because it is only going to be beneficial to us all in the long run.

This sounds like a great effort. Would like to see something like this get started on the Elkhorn. Maybe there is already a group that I'm just not familiar with.

I am curious though. Do they draw water from dammed up sections on the creeek for the area water supply? How many low-head dams are on Stoner?

Yes, they do draw from the main pool on the creek for the local water supply. There are some other sources in the area but i believe this to be the main one. As far as low head dams, there are a few depending on what sections of the creek you are on but at normal flow i really don't believe these to be the typical type. They are pretty visible compared to most low head dams i have seen and are more like shallow crossings for farm use.
