I was a dyed in the wool, dog loving, cat hating person. Didn't know beans about cats other than they walked on cars and peed on my doors and patio furniture. My dog died a year ago and we hadn't bought another one, we were petless.
About 3 months ago we spent a week camping on the lake. Just before we left coming home we caught a 6-lb. catfish. As we walked across the deck returning from the camping trip, we heard the faint cries of a cat. I looked up and a yellow and white tabby cat can stumbling and falling across the lawn begging for food. Someone had dumped him at our house. He was so starved his hair was falling out and he could barely walk. He was a year old and weighed 2 pounds. I walked toward him and he was terrified so I went back and watched him from the deck. He finally made it to within about 15 ft. of us and stood there. We had no pet food and had to clean the fish. I chopped up the fish's liver and put it on the grass between us and the cat. He took a few minutes to taste it and still longer before he took a bite. I was afraid he would get sick from eating raw fish because he hadn't eaten for so long. Stroke of genius; I fed him a can of Sweetie Pie's vienna sausage knowing it would give him some strength. That did it, kitty decided he would hang around but kept his distance.
I bought a good brand of high nutrition cat food for young cats and started feeding him. The neighbor's cat kept eating his food so I moved it into the laundry room and left the door open about 12 inches so he could come in, eat, and go back out. I was reading the paper one morning and heard something; it was kitty walking across the living room. He was purring so loud he sounded like a lawn mower; he jumped up on my lap, curled up and went to sleep. We are now officially owned by a beautiful yellow and white tabby cat named Sambo. He has never had an accident in the house, asks to go outside when it's potty time, and he purrs all the time.
The first order of business was a visit to the vet for a health checkup, shots and neutering. When the vet, who is a cat lover, heard Sambo's story he neutered him for $20, charged me half price for his shots and trimmed his nails.
Sambo now weighs 9 pounds, has huge muscles, a sleek beautiful coat, walks like a bodybuilder and stomps his feet when he walks. His current claim to fame is he finally whipped another male cat that had been jumping on him. Swetie Pie calls him Ahhnold,(as in Swarzzeneger). We look at each other and say, "Can you believe we have a CAT? Maybe God was trying to tell us something."
