    Re: Everyone-BE CAREFUL!

GPS is the worst thing that ever happened to some people. They honestly believe that if that screen says it's good they are good to go. I'll say it and I don't care who's feelings I may hurt.

If you run full blast at night using only a GPS to navigate you are a complete and total MORON!

I sat on Cedar last Saturday night and watched a number of boats that were flying down the lake way too dark to see them without lights. If this continues, someone is going to get killed.

Yep that lake will have some bad accidents. It's just too crowded with boats of all sizes.

Not to mention standing timber and stumps everywhere. You can't fix stupid, there is no known cure.

GPS, full moon on a clear night in August, night vision goggles, whatever a person thinks they have to his or her advantage...I'll never understand why anyone runs on plane at night, let alone wide open. I always like being on Cumberland in August to catch the harvest moon, but all you'll catch me doing is idling or slightly above idle...or...completely shut down on the main lake and drifting.

sickening is about the only word i can come up with to describe how we felt when we came past the mouth of beaver this morning and saw that boat up on the bank. we went and checked all around the boat to see if someone was still there. as bad as the boat looked i dreaded finding out how the people in the boat were. sounds like they are very luck to be around to tell the story, hope they are ok. the fog was so thick this morning you could barely see the navigation lights on the front of the boat, its a long way from jtown to rowena at idle speed!

For the protection of others who might be on the lake(s), don't think it would be a bad idea if Kentucky required all boat operators to have a license, not unlike the testing required to drive an auto....Still, you can't fix stupid, but maybe...just maybe you could limit their opportunities to harm, kill others...

This maybe a crazy question, but how do they miss the buoys. They don't match up much to gps

    Re: Everyone-BE CAREFUL!

First to admit that I do run on plane at night and do use my GPS for help. I say for help because I know Dale Hollow from Illwill to Hendricks Creek like I know the layout in my house. That being said, only had one CLOSE call and that was when the other boat was running towards me without ANY LIGHTS ON AT ALL and we would have hit head on if he had not turned on a flashlight in the nick of time so I could turn and avoid him. He had forgotten his running lights in the truck but never went back to get them.

I do fish Cumberland at night as well and bought a map just for the 680 lake level. Mainly I fish from the Dam to Harmon and Difficulty Creek so I took a permanent marker and outlined the new "outer bank" plus looked for any new shallow water and islands that were formed when they dropped the lake and marked them accordingly. It is not that hard to do because all you had to do is follow the contour lines on the map. You will find points, islands, shallow water areas and other stuff that makes it so much easier to decifer when you are on the water.
