The choice is yours to share or not. To each his own for sure. But look at it this way, if you do share the info, and someone "milks" your spot, then that forces you to do what you love best, and figure out another pattern. In the end, you help a fella out with a fishin' spot, and you get to hone your skills by finding another pattern, and probably learning something new in the process. For you guys that love finding the pattern, it should be a win-win.

I really don't expect people to start posting GPS coodinates in public posts, but saying "I caught X-fish in cove-X using X-lure" may just help someone out along the way. If a guy gets on here and asks about GRL, send him a PM, and help him out. I'm telling you, you will get more help from people in the long run than you put in. And help when you need it, is always a good thing.

I've probably helped 10-15 people out on this board this year alone....I even went fishing with a guy who asked for help before a tournament....Everytime I've been asked for help I've told them the baits I've been using and the pattern I've been catching them on...I didn't tell them to go fish this brushpile or that cove but gave them a good place to start and what baits had been working for me....

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers man, we are not asking for live video of shorline and gps co-ordinates when your at your honey-hole. Just some basics IE, deep, shallow ,upper end, lower end .top water or deep. live bait or artificial. just a little help. Didn't mean to come off ass a "smart ass".

    Wowsers!

Limited time to fish and your favorite local waters aren't producing like they usually do? Want to explore some new water? Interested in chasing a species you lack experience catching? Fishin.com can help.

Many folks have helped me on this forum which has been greatly appreciated. If something I know can help someone judged not to be a jerk and they are willing to ask for help, they will receive it from me. Not withstanding the fact that most times I won't know anymore than you about it.

PM has been most useful to me for business transactions. Discussing money in public is vulgar and often times will start a bidding war. A few times I have received more specific fishing info through PM. Some of it has come because folks didn't want to deal with the deluge of questions, criticism or, down right hostility that sometimes can result from sharing said info in public. Some of it is just because it is more personal, not quite face to face but...

Finally going fishing on the CR Tuesday! Yes!

So your pay check has just as many zeros in it as mine! Darn shame we can't find a way to get at least a couple ones in there somewhere.

Not intended to offend, advertizing I thought helped offset the costs of operating the board. Didn't mean to imply anybody was sending kids to Purdue

A friend of mine sent his kids to Purdue. Then when they left, he moved to Georgia.

Every time this discussion comes up on here, it always goes the same way....people get personal, and act like people want their exact gps coordinates or something? If you are knocking them dead in a spot, it is your choice if you want to devulge that exact spot or not, but at least report on the "type" of spots that are producing. i.e. structure, depth, lure, etc. Lakes are huge, there are a lot of fish in them, and giving someone a pattern to go by isn't going to clear them out....they still have to CATCH the fish! And if you truly do enjoy spending a lot of time on the water developing patterns, and that is what you enjoy the most, then you should be willing to give your spots up so you can begin that process once again? As for me, I enjoy catching fish....and even more so....I enjoy helping others catch fish....escpecially if they are in my boat! So, who wants to go catch some fish?!! FISH ON!!!

    Lightbulb I got an idea

Sarcasm all over this thread. He didn't say he wanted to do all the work so that the lesser advocates can take the easy way out and reap rewards with no sewing. His point was he wanted to know that when he whips that lake's ass, it was all him all the way, can't blame him for that. Instead of arguing for way too long, someone ask a question...and if someone has an answer they will respond...and we will look AND sound like an informative board.

    Re: I got an idea

If I had any pet peeves about the posting on the board, it's:

The posts entitled, "XXXXX Fishing report" then the post goes on to ask for any fishing information on XXXX lake. I feel like I've been duped into opening a post advertising a report so they can get more looks/responses. I will never ever ever provide any info to one of those, but that's just me being me and I know most probably never even think about it.

The Posts entitled, "XXXX Fishing report" then the post goes on to say they slayed them at XXXX lake without providing anything but boastful brag. To me that's not a fishing report. That might be the type of posts that started all this?

In general, people are going to offer whatever tips they want to. On other advanced striper boards, there are a wealth of information complete with fishing reports from all over without having to go into the fine details of the exact spots. But as the patterns change so much, the more valuable information is all the advice on equipment, technique subtleties, and migration patterns of both fish and bait. We can provide a load of information about whatever we are fishing for and where without giving GPS coords.

And who matters to me. If there is a newbie trying to learn how to catch bluegill for their kid, I'd give em an exact log they could fish close to if I could.

Protect the resource, promote the sport.

Well good deal. That is exactly what most people are asking for. People really don't expect you to tell them the exact brushpile to fish over, but baits, areas, depth, ect... can really help a guy out. Sounds like you have done your part quite well.

I think really, the point of this thread is to raise awarness about how the board, and people in general are starting to get away from the commonality of fishing, in as far as people helping people. Which raises the question, "Is that what we want the board to become?, And what should we do to prevent the board from falling away from the helpfulness and friendlyness of it's hay-day?".

IMO, the tournament mentality that sneaks in to some peoples personality is what causes the disconnect. It is important for a tournament fisherman to find a spot, keep it to himself, and produce fish. But I NEVER thought of this board, as a tournament board. Fishin.com has always been a place for guys to see whats going on in other parts of the state in the fishing world, share success stories, and help the guys out that ask for help. I never want to see this board get away from that, and if we need a thread like this every so often to raise awarness about bringing the board back to it's roots, then that is exactly what we should do.

I've been around these boards a long time, and it has always been a pillar of the fishing community for information and knowledge for me. I do not want to see that change anytime soon.

    Re: Keeping Secrets

I dont mind at all giving out general info on say Ky lake, even keep a small website just for that-Not a forum-just info website
As for what baits sure many times many baits work, spots general locations such as main lake flats newjohnsonville-their is a discharge there by the way.
Is any hole or ledge yours on ky lake, kind of doubt it most are community holes, many of those fishing a particlar ledge seem to think it theirs, someone showed them most likly or they found it same way as others.Courtesy is appreciated by all so give it in return.
With 2100 miles of shoreline shurely you can share it with a few thousand others.
About the only thing I dont do is give exact coordinates, most with eyes and ears who listen can find whatever I describe, often containing a pic.
This taken from within sight of Paris landing entrance.

It is not another forum, just info ,pics

    Re: Keeping Secrets

i have offered "the exact spot" (mouth of lily), "the exact bait" (4 inch gizzard shad) , "the exact depth" (15-25 feet) "the exact time" (as soon as you can see your rod tip) to another gentleman(peter) on this site via PM. we limited every morning and "my pattern" didnt do him much good......i felt bad for this gentleman because he will gladly return the favor of a "hot-bite" if given the chance. HOWEVER had i posted this info on the open forum it would have been standing room only and he probably would have had to start elsewhere anyway.
i will never turn anyone down on the PM , i have found that the people you help via pm (peter and two others) are eager to offer what theyve found.
pretty good trade in my opinion since all of us occasionally stand there and scratch our bewildered heads as what to do next
