It don't matter what spot and what angle for George. He needs the kind that says "Fish Here" "Don't Fish Here" "Throw Jig Here" "Throw Spinnerbait" "Throw Shaky Head" "Throw Crankbait" and even then he would need somebody to read the screen for him. With all that and my money is still on the fish.
I have a crestliner with a stepped hull. My hummingbird picks uo fine. May get clutter at 40+ mph but get a good depth reading. My transducer is over the first step about 18" right of the lower unit. Mine is mounted to be level in the water.I have a Fisher pro hawk which is the same thing as a tracker V-18 with the stepped hull, I mounted my transducer just to the right of motor mount flush with the top edge of the step. I angled the trans slightly forward and it has no problems picking up, but I'm topping out speed wise at 42 mph. It does throw a little rooster tail up.

I note that mine also throws a mini roostertail.
Perhaps if you get it a little deeper it may help.

I'm gonna start hiring Dave Stewart as my Fish Finder............of course, I will only be able to fish 2-3 times a year.....but hey......I bet it will work better than what I've been using.

I have an eagle on mine it has an option to change the reading speed, maybe an option for yours?
Best option for a tin boat is a through hull mount on the pad, making sure it is not behind a line of rivets. Otherwise you will not get readings at speed. Transom mount transducers are usually not completely in the water when on plane, if they are, then they are at risk of getting knocked off fairly easily.

Good to see you feeling good Elnut. That was funny.
Let us know how it works if you get one Geo.I have the Tracker 195 with the step hull, and have the SAME ISSUE........I'm seriously thinking of putting the xducer down lower.
I also found this site.........and SERIOUSLY thought about a through hull transducer for my aluminum boat.

You can not mount a side image to shoot tru hull and the transducer needs to be down by the drain to the left or right were clean water comes out from under your boat, and yes it will throw a little spray off of it.![]()
Easy fix==== SLOW DOWN

Guys, I have a Tahoe with an eagle on it, it works great at speed, the key is to mount it level with the bottom of the boat, and leave the mount loose enough so that if you hit something it will flip up and not break off. I have hit it a few times and just flip it down and it works again. And I would also say that mine makes a rooster tail. We mounted mine about 8 inches from the outer edge of the boat on the outer step.
