How much do you mow, and what with?

I think I have almost an acre and I use a push mower. I think the push mower makes the yard look nicer than a riding mower and would probably use that even on a bigger yard unless it took me longer than a couple of hours.

Sounds very similar to our place. Bit over two acres with sloping hills on top of various limestone beds. I have a cub cadet LT something with a 50" deck. Had it for about 6 years and I can mow the yard and pick up the grass clippings in less than two hours. I'd suggest at least a 48" deck. Keep it under $3000.

I gotta say that if you are mowing an acre yard with a push mower in anything like two hours you gotta be humpin it. I mow with a 46" cut X mark ZTR and I mow about an acre per hour. Mowing a 3 acre yard takes me 3 hours of hard mowing. Trimming takes additional time so you are a better man than I am.

I did say almost an acre, but perhaps mine is smaller than I think. I'm not really good on judging, but from memory when I bough it I thought it was at least 3/4 acre. It's flat and has a lot of landscaped areas, but it only takes me about 45 minutes (only mowing, not edging, trimming, etc.).

LOL, Now that sounds more like it. Truely cutting one full ''True'' acre with a pushmower takes awhile and can be quite the workout....

If you want plenty time to fish or hunt or play with the kids, a ZTR is the only way to go with a big yard. I cut 2 acres with lots of trees, etc in about 2 hours with my Woods 6250 zero turn. 25 HP 3 cyl Kubota with front mount 50" deck.

I guess it depends on what you're calling mowing,I have a 140 acres here with 80 acres in tillable land or pasture that I either cut hay,mow to keep desirables out of once or twice a year,or rotate mowing for wildlife,I have a 50 horsepower 4 wheel drive Massey Ferguson Tractor with a 7 foot bushhog or a disc mower on,I have about 5 acres we consider "Yard" that I use a 35 horsepower 4 wheel drive Massey Ferguson Compact tractor with a 5 foot woods finish mower on excluding my wife's territory right at the house where all her jungle of flowers,plants,and trees are that gets mowed with a 22" Sears push mower and weed trimmer.
My neighbor friend that we helped each other during hay time,had 800 acres of which he worked 300 acres of nothing but either Alfalfa or Timothy mixed hay,he was 79 years old and had a stroke on his tractor this past summer and died in his field,doing what he loved best.Davisd Hart will be sorely missed around here.

After all the replies, sounds pretty clear that a zero turn is the way to roll...I've heard good things about some of the Cubs, or the Exmarks. I'd love to have a 60" cut, but could only afford that if I could find a used machine.

It may not matter anyway, because its not looking like the seller is willing to negotiate much on the price of the property we are looking at...and it's a bit out of my league with the price tag on it now, even though it's below appraisal. We made an offer and he countered by barely budging an inch off asking price.

Might be stuck in neighborhood-hell, where I can mow my grass with a Schick Disposable Razor it's so small...but at least my daughter will have plenty of kids to play with as she grows up...

Zero Turn is worth it if you have enough yard to make it cost efficient and don't have a big hillside,zero turns are a little tricky on hills,seen more than one ran down into a creek and one boy lost a few fingers.
Having plenty of kids around for yours to play with is not always a good thing.My kids have plenty of good lifelong friends from living in the country.

Mowing is like sex, often and enjoyable is better.

Mission: 3/8 acre
Equipment: 22 inch Honda self propelled push mulching mower
Fuel: 1 pint gasoline, and 3 each 12 ounce cold long-necks.
Mowing time including trimming: 1.5 hours.
Mowing time less trimming: .75 hours.
Method and sequence:
1. 1 long neck, decide to mow.
2. Complete 1/2 of task, with or without trimming, break for 15 minutes and 2nd long-neck.
3. Complete mowing task, store all equipment, and emply 3rd long-neck.
4. If sun is setting, and it's real nice out, take up a fighting position on the back deck to overwatch the mowed lawn as it begins to recover from mowing, and conduct close observation thru the bottom of long neck #4 (optional).
