    Bluegrass FWA closed to fishing

Well , tried a little fishing at Bluegrass today and learned the entire area is closed to fishing . Now closing the big pits makes sense during duck & goose season but closing the entire area ?

Yea that bad. I hate it when they close it to fishing. I don't hunt that much anymore but I still like to fish when it's nice outside.

i hate that it is closed. just wish they would have one open. but on the flip side its good to let the lakes rest from all the pressure it gets. I think it reopens in feb.

Yea I feel bad that it's closed. But I take a lot of pictures of that place and put them on my computer as screen saver photos, so I can remember what the place looks like all winter long. LOL. That helps a little bit. But this time of the year I use to love as I liked it when the lakes froze over. That way I got to ice skate for free on the ponds.

I remember a few years back when it got so cold that there was about 3" of ice water by the launch ramp at Bluegrass Pit. Some of you guys were out on the lake ice fishing.

And back around 2004 I fished well into December that years. If it's above 50 deg after a long cold spell it feels like a balmy day and I'll be tempted to get the boat out of the garage and go after some winter crappie.

I've fish down at KY lake in Oct, Nov and into Dec. Never went down there in Jan or Feb but come March is CRAPPIE FISHING TIME. Can't wait.

I guess until Winters over I'll just have to do other things like hunt or skate.

Anybody who knows of someone who duck/goose hunts BG please post it here . I havent found one person who does . Dont know about anybody else but when I get some days off I like to fish no matter the temp or weather . Due to gas prices we like to fish closer to home so Bluegrass gets the nod must times . My main complaint about the closing is the blanket policy , closing the entire area . I fish the smaller pits all year and never see much waterfowl .Now Loon pit seems to be the favorite place for geese so yea closing it and Bluegrass pit makes sense . Come on IDNR give us a break !

I'm not sure how many guys actually waterfowl hunt at Bluegrass. They have a sign in at the parking lot where you may be able to see who's signed in to hunt.

I guess we will have to wait until the end of February or the Start of March to begin fishing again. I think that they shut down parts of Patoka for the winter.

I use to hunt ducks when I was in college but that was many years ago. But I went down to Hoveys to hunt.

I don't have my goose decoys anymore as I gave them to my mom's neighbor after I sold my shotgun and got married. I've got access to a Good Shotgun now but don't have any decoys to use. And I'm too old and tired to get up at 4 am to go waterfowl hunting in the bad weather.

You might call up to Sugar Ridge and ask them to do a study to see if there are enough fishermen to help change their policy. Perhaps getting a petition signed and taken to the Property Manager to see what he can do. I'm sure he's got rules that he has to follow for management of the property. Even the Director of Fish and Wildlife has to answer to the Natural Resource Commission or the Governor. Good luck as I too would like to fish in Dec or Jan if it's warm enough.

Bluegrass sees more hunting pressure when Hovey freezes up but the hunting is a crock up there. With the middle lake being a refuge(which is good) that leaves the two other big pits open for hunting. Then they close those down 3 days out of the week including sunday and only let you hunt till noon on the days you can hunt. So for working stiffs like me I can hunt up there on saturday mornings and that is it.

If they only allow waterfowl hunting on certain days and the hunting ends at noon on those days then why can't the let people fish when there is no hunting going on? Not that I want to fish that much during the winter months but if it's above 50 deg I might want to wet a line .

I seen about a half dozen guys standing out in a field west of Otter pit the other day with 75 or more decoys.
Thought it was interesting. I spoke with one of them that was heading back out there and he said they hadn't even seen anything the whole time they'd been there. Kinda reminded me of our squirrel hunt Monday morning at Sugar Ridge.
