    Cumberland River Stripers

Going to Cumberland this weekend (Sept 14-15) Thought I might try a river trip for some big stripers. Is putting in at Burkesville and going up river as good as any spot to fish? 18' Jon with a 60hp...is that okay to run that far down from the dam or do I need to go down further? Any suggestions would be appreciated...thanks Brad

Waste of time on the river

Buddy, I been fishing the river for years, the river is entirely too low to fish this time of year. The river is only a foot or two deep. You are just going to tear your boat up down there. Beside that, this is not the right time to fish for stripers on the river. Save you self the time, and go fish the lake. Pull planer boards about 10-15 feet deep using live bait and you should be in good shape. -Chuck

It's one of those thing where you could catch them or not. The river isn't too low I think if you know what you are doing. Big picture is live shad and a good cloudy day. Just my two cents!

Been fishing the lake for years and don't get to go the River below the dam. My excuse has always been not knowing the area and afraid to put my boat in down there.
Are there many bank fishing opurtunities on that stretch? I would like to try and walk the banks and fish it this Fall late and even the winter. Have any of you guys ever done that before and did you do any good???

I waded a stretch of the CR above Cumberland Falls once when the water levels were low and did decent on the Smallmouth.

Don't listen to the guy about the river being down. I was at Burkesville Saturday. 6ft at the ramp. Up river anywhere from 8ft to 14ft deep. We went 5 miles up river never once hit anything under 5 ft deep. You'll be fine. I have a 14ft Mod V never once had an issue. Below ramp was 7 ft and up.

    TRUST ME on this one.

water depth isn't going to be an issue from the dam to Bville some 27 miles of river below the dam, (at this present time) we are getting some major shower s and the run off is major, what you will need to understand is how to run the river, with the levels now you can do it with some common sense an a good top 0.

It helps a lot to know which side of the islands to run. It may not always be apparent and sometimes the narrow side is the deepest. Stop in at Strange bait shop in Burksville just south of the square at the turn off to the ramp and they should know. They did have some copies of hand-drawn maps that you can make notes on. Some of the passes are pretty narrow.

Will the rain today-help or hurt?

I will stop there for sure...thanks for that Peter. I'm wondering now if the rain today will help things or hurt things. Sounds like there will be more current at the least.
