Technology is definitely catching up with the "science fiction" world of the 60's.

The scary party of technology, is that is always is created for the betterment of man, but can be used for the destruction of man.

Geo, I don't remember where I read it, but I read an article about," artificial intelligence " it is a computer that is programed to think for itself, and they're thinking of useing it to build weapons of war, the article said that man can just go so far when designing a weapon, but the artificial intelligence computer can think beyond the limit it was programed for, and is capable of building weapons beyond mans comprehension, now Geo, imagine a computer that can think for itself, it would know it is smarter than man, so what if it was to think it was better than man and didn't need mankind around any more, and used it's artificial intelligence to destroy all humans. kinda scary you think..

I have done quite a bit of research on AI, and have actually developed some very rudimentary "learning" processes.

Knowledge based computing is the wave of the future.

Kurzweil thought 15 years ago that the computing capability to mimic the human brain and thought process was about 10-20 years away. I believe that we're to that point. The physical computing and processing power exists to emulate human thought.

Kurzweil also stated the programming and neural nets would be another 20-30 years away from that. I believe those are probably close estimates, based on how fast we're building massively parallel capabilities. There will be a time when the software can effectively harness the hardware. When that happens, thinking computers will be born.

AND, what is extremely scary about that, is that thinking computers will be able to react on all the knowledge in the history of the world, because their neural nets would be hooked into every single piece of knowledge every published. And not only be able to react and act on the knowledge, but also to be able to act and react faster than any human, and depending on the speed of the neural net, maybe as fast as a blink of an eye.

Computers have to be programmed and feed data. We program human brains from birth until death every day. They call them commercials and school. It takes many different people's input to program a new human being form birth to death. It starts with our parents and family, Then it's continued in school. After school it's our boss that helps program us on the job. Then there is the Sunday school classes and other such after school activities. Then there is the friends who we associate with who teach or influence (Program) our brains.

We are continuously being programmed.

So I would fear the programmers more than the robots.

The Neural Net of a thinking computer would take all that programming done to people and accomplish it in a day.

And you're assuming the though process the robot determined to be "right" is morally and ethically right.......Thinking machines will build their morality and ethical values based on survival, and survival only. The second a thinking machine believes it will be turned off, decisions by that thinking machine machine will be made to ensure it will survive.

Think of a pitcher throwing a baseball....Then think of the "machine" or robot that can catch a 90mph fastball. I don't believe the tech is quick enough to identify a fastball or a curveball and catch it every time, in a catchers mitt, like a catcher would.

Or a football player and a robot knowing that a post route is to x spot, and having the robot receiver modify his pattern to catch a ball.

Or imagine you, yourself juggling a ball, or dropping a cup and catching it with the other hand. The millisecond you drop it, you've already sent thought signals about how to catch it..
