New Event Wows the
Faithful at Taylorsville While I have been around fishing for 40 years, I just started reporting in the last 2 years for Fishin.com I had heard of the World Championship Fishing Events in passing and in editorials and around. What I heard was, that this event was not in the best interest of fishing. Especially tournament fishing. After going to the event at Taylorsville, I will say that at least I have changed my mind. The format is not a racing format to me. It is a closed course boating skills test that is based on the time the boat takes to navigate the course. It is not a race. One boat does not drag race the other and only one boat is on the course at a time. You will find on this sites Kentucky Discussion Board reports on the first 2 days events this will be a report on the final day. I got to the ramp early Sunday to ride with one of the Camera Boats to report on the top 4 anglers going into the competitions final day. However I got a treat, I was asked to ride with Stephen Browning from Hot Springs Arkansas as his observer. Stephen was very nice and put up with me quite well. I tried to stay as quite as possible but if you know me you know that is really hard. Stephen fished a buzz bait early along banks with stickups and lay downs. Occasionally switching to a jig with a Zoom trailer to toss to the logs. He also used the trusty standby the Rat-L-Trap to toss in the flats in the back of the creek. Stephen caught a bunch of fish, but all were just a tad short. I heard from him that consideration was made of allowing the anglers to weigh Kentucky Spotted Bass since they were legal but the anglers chose not to do that since none had practiced a pattern for that particular fish. Stephen is a very nice and articulate fellow who was willing to talk even to some anglers that came up while he was fishing and asked questions. However he blanked the third day as well, (No Keepers) which was a first for him on the trail. I almost made the national media when we got back to the dock to get out when I stepped on the tires on the dock instead of the dock and almost fell in the water. Luckily I managed to fall back in the boat unharmed. I can see it now. Me standing in 4 feet of water soaked to the bone wearing Donnie Keetons Overalls and Brand New Bengals Jacket he loaned me Hey Donnie I forgot to tell you, sorry. Donnie had graciously offered me warm clothing as I had packed in haste Friday Morning and failed to pack my coat, and overalls. The final day was tallied and the overall winner and fishing winner was Alton Jones. (See Pictures) Altons winning total was 13 lbs 6 oz for the 3 day event and an overall time on the skills course of 2: 7: 7 (Minutes: Seconds: Tenths of a second) Skeet Reese won the Baoting Course. In closing I would like to make this Editorial Comment: The idea that tournament fishing has nothing to do with speed is not realistic. Let us face the reality, and that is first guy to the spot gets the first chance to fish it. That means that Tournament Anglers are going to use speed to get to a spot. However another fact is that the guy leaving work at 5 PM and getting to the lake at 6:30 or 7 PM wants to fish as much as he can in the time he has in the spots he is comfortable with. and he wants to go fast as well. Speed is part of a growing world. We work for faster internet connections and faster modems and faster chips, and it is normal to want everything to work faster. Do you have a Microwave? We even cook our meals fast. Get over it folks speed is part of life and faster safer boats will be the end result of this tournament circuit. How fast is too fast? I do not know. I would not like to see 100 mph boats in the hands of novices, but current speeds are manageable and realistic for most people. We sell and allow cars on our roads that exceed even those speeds. Why? It is not legal, it is not safe, but we still make and drive these vehicles? People like Ray Scott who have gone to great lengths to try to stop this sporting event should take another look at it, and should look at the benefits that this can bring overall to the sport. If the companies work as hard to provide safer boats as the people on the NASCAR circuit then this will benefit everyone. WCF is a natural evolution of the sport. I would never sanction or agree to an open racing format. I do not believe that it would be in anyones interest to do Bass Boat Drag Racing. However a slalom course with turns and bends and straights that mimic real life conditions, I have no problem with. I ran Kentucky Lake a few weeks ago as an Observer and I saw nothing in this event that I did not see on the lake with the amateurs and semi- pros that I road with. For those of you who did not go to the event because you did not agree with it or think it is reckless, you missed a great show. Thanks to Don Corkran, Fish Fishburne and the staff of WCF for putting on an impressive show at Taylorsville. I really hope they can come back. I would like to see them in Louisville or maybe even Kentucky Lake. However this type of event works best up close to the fans and I am not sure where it could go on Kentucky Lake. The River Front Park would pack these guys in and would make an impressive show for everyone. Hey they could even set up and do the weigh in on the water and never have to take the boats out at the River Front. Oh yeah they have to weigh the boats at the end. Hmm, I think we could figure something out. How about the weekend before Derby? Make it an annual event? Imagine the crowds . WCF Anglers and their sponsors, boats and motors. Dustin Wilks, Triton,
