Mosquito Lagoon Fish Camp News and Fishing
Report Fall/Winter
I just wanted to take a little time to thank everyone for a great year
and wish everyone the happiest of Holidays and an outstanding New Year!
It's been one full year now that I've been back guiding after taking a
year off to complete the Mosquito Lagoon Fish Camp. The Fish Camp has
been an overwhelming success. The business is steadily building. I had
no idea some folks would come from so far and some also repeat their
stay this first year.
We're finally getting into our winter fishing pattern. The water level
is dropping and visibility has improved dramatically over the last few
weeks. The water temp is back up to a comfortable 70 after dropping into
the low 60's last week. The redfish handled the temperature drop well
but the big trout got a case of lock jaw. Now with the temp back up it's
possible to land a gator trout when fishing for reds.
Most of the reds we've been catching have been in the middle of the
"slot", about 24-25 inches and weighing about 5 lbs. This last week
though we had some bigger ones surprise us, going 11, 15, and 19lbs.,
while fishing the "slot reds". I've seen some big bulls scattered but my
main target has been the 4-6 pounders in real shallow water.
Today I tried out a new fly recently given to me from a friend from
Texas. It caught a nice tailing red, early, just as the sun was coming
up. This past week, we've used artificial shrimp, topwater plugs, soft
plastic jerk baits and cut mullet, going with the flow using whatever
works. Live shrimp was the only bait that didn't do well, but in the
coming weeks that's the bait if you're not going artificial or fly.
Some of you who fished with me early in '07 will be happy to know that
my 18" Waterman has a new Yamaha on it. The old motor finally coughed
its last after some touch and go nursing!
My latest toy is a Flatstalker. I liked it so much I became a dealer!
Check out the link below and if you're interested you can demo it at the
Camp.
My websites need work, links aren't working, etc. If you need info,
phone or email me I'll answer promptly.
Stay in touch and keep fishing!
