LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN .6 FEET, 86 DEGREES, CLEAR BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing has been just plain out tough but there is still a early and late top water bite. The fish have seemed to move shallower in the grass, which is odd but true. The best way to catch early morning or late bass is to fish a Big Bite Bait 3.5" Top Toad in White. Rig this on heavy braid with a 5/0 Gamakatsu Superline hook. There are good frog holes all over the lake, but the better ones seem to be shallow up next to the bank on inside grass lines. Bream and minnows are up on the banks early in the morning feeding on insects and the Top Toad will catch the biggest bass in the lake. After the sun comes up, then head to Spring Creek and fish deep grass lines with a crank bait and Texas-rig. For cranking, use a Spro Little John DD in Chartreuse Shad and for the Texas-rig, go with a Big Bite Baits 6" Kriet Tail Worm in green pumpkin. Rig both the crank bait and Texas-rig on 16 lb Sunline Super Fluorocarbon. See www.bigbitebaits.com and check out the new Sugar Cane Worm that is soon to be released. The infamous Paddle Tail worm made by Zeta Bait Co. has long been an absolute hammer on Lake Seminole. The Sugar Cane Worm from Big Bite is going to be an absolute beast on Seminole. It has a unique head design similar to the Cane Stick and a big paddle tail that gives out a lot of vibration and thump. It is going to be offered in two sizes and I can't wait to get my hands on it. Once again please visit www.bigbitebaits.com to see their new line of baits. God Bless!

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 2 FEET, 89 DEGREES AND STAINED

Bass fishing is fair and the top water baits are producing some good fish early mornings. Try main lake sea walls and rip rap near deep water. Pop R’s, Spook’s, and buzz baits will work. Work the baits fast and cover water quickly. Have a weightless Zoom Fluke ready as a comeback bait for fish that strike and miss the top water lure. Fish a Fluke beyond where the strike occurred. Retrieve with short jerks to the strike area, and then allow it to slowly sink. Remember to use a sharp, wide gap hook such as a 3/0 Gamakatsu. Sufix Elite 12 pound test works well with this rig. Try a #5 swivel about 10 inches above the hook. More fish are beginning to show up on the summer points, humps and ledges in the central and upper lake. Try depths of 6 to 15 feet. In the clearer water down lake, fish 12 to 25 feet deep. If you catch one fish, fish the area thoroughly with different baits and retrieves. Try a Zoom Finesse worm on a Carolina rig. Use 14 or 17 pound main line with a three-foot leader of 12 pound test. A ½ ounce weight will come through heavy cover more easily, but a ¾ or one ounce weight is best in current or deep water down the lake. Chartreuse or shad pattern deep crank baits will also work, especially during power generation. Down the lake a Mann’s 30 Plus is a good deep water lure.

Lake Oconee, Georgia's first experience with a slot size limit for largemouth bass

Report Updated August 27, 2010

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL POOL, 92 DEGREES AND CLEAR BY MARK SMITH, REEL TIME GUIDE SERVICE 404-803-0741. wwwreeltimeguideservice.com

Bass fishing is slow. Go at first light and use a Strike King white and chartreuse buzz bait on the rip rap. If Georgia Power is pulling water, then stay with it and back up your buzz bait with a number 7 Shad Rap in the baby bass pattern. Make sure the bait is in contact with the bottom. Bounce it off of the rocks. As the sun comes up move to the deep docks and pitch a jig in as far back under the dock as you can. Work the jig out slow. You can also pick up some fish off of the deep humps down near the dam. Use your Lowrance to find the humps with a lot of structure on them. Use a Carolina rig with at least a 1/2 ounce weight and a long leader with a dark red or red black Culprit worm. Work the worm down the hump to deeper water, contact as much brush as you can and work the worm slowly into deeper water.

Line side fishing is slow. The heat has put the big striper under stress. They should start to bite in a few weeks. As for now the best action is white bass and small hybrids chasing shad on top. This is going on all over the south end of the lake in the afternoons. Use a popping cork rig or a small jig with a sassy shad. These fish are feeding on small bait so downsize to match the hatch.

Crappie fishing is fair: Fishing at night is the way to go. The fish are in the timber from 15-20 feet deep. Live minnows are working best.

JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN 2.5 FEET, CLEAR AND 87 DEGREES BY ED CAVENDER.

Bass fishing is slow but there is some action early and late as the days get shorter. The summer pattern is still in effect and bass are being caught south near the dam. Dark green pumpkin worms on a Texas rig seem to be the bait of choice when fish with a slow presentation on or around wood and brush piles. Some nicer bass are being caught on the drop-shot rig in 20 plus feet of water using smaller three and four inch worms. Vertical jigging of bridge's is also putting keeper bass in the boat. Work all baits slow and move around as the day heats up. Wood and rocks are also holding bass and several baits are being used to catch these slimy creatures. A 3/8 ounce pig and jig in dark brown/black or a black/red combination seems to be working along with a Texas rigged pumpkin seed worm. Throw under the docks as far back as possible and let the bait sit still for a few seconds. Start working it slowly and try to cover as much of the dock as possible. www.gafishing.org.

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.4 FEET, 83 DEGREES AND CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair early but mid day fishing is slow. The early morning water temperatures are lower but it quickly warms up after the sun comes up over the tree tops. Some rain fell during the week again and stained the upper part of the Savannah River as well as Beaver Dam Creek. A six inch finesse Worm on a short Carolina rig at 18 inches is a good all day rig. A few fish are being caught on Shad Raps, Number 7, and X-Raps or Sebile Swimmers in shad patterns. All of these are good choices. With any heavy rain, fish the mud lines around the points and in the small cuts or coves. The cooler temperatures will get some bass up and feeding in shallow water early. Fish shallow during the month of September early in the morning and slowly work your way into the deeper water by the afternoon hours. Jigs are the best all day up the rivers as bass look for newly hatched crawfish after the weeks full moon. This month fish any rip rap rock with the bandit crank baits in shad and a small all white spinner bait.

CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 4.4 FEET, 83 DEGREES AND STAINED

Bass fishing during the day is slow during the day hours and better during the evening hours. The grass mats are thick along the bottom making it difficult to fish those Carolina rigs in close. Small spinner baits fished just under the surface and over the hydrilla mats has proven to catch some good Bass last week. Heavy thunderstorms have been present across the Lake and this is adding a little color along the shorelines and coloring the water in the creeks and up in the Little River area. Use slow moving DT6's, the small buzz baits and the #5 jointed Shad Raps to cover the water column in these areas. The bass aren't bunched up, so keep moving. During the evening hours, fish the humps down on the main Lake with Pop R’s Rico’s and Spittin Image top water baits. Look for signs of bait fish breaking the surface, until dark then fish the edges of the deeper side of the humps.

Report Updated August 27, 2010

LAKE WEISS IS DOWN 1.76 FEET, STAINED AND 86 DEGREES BY MARK COLLINS GUIDE SERVICE

Bass fishing is fair and with all the rain this past week and the influx of fresh water a lot of fish are being caught around culverts that have a lot of run off water moving thru them. Most Largemouth and Spotted bass are still being caught on off shore structure, like main lake humps and points, and a lot of bass are on the old river and creek channel ledges also, with the very warm water temperature the fish are not very active during the day. A Carolina rigged Senko worm in green pumpkin/chartreuse or junebug/chartreuse, is working awesome on these fish. Crank Baits and Spinner Baits and Carolina rigged plastics are all catching these fish also. Some fish are being caught flipping deeper docks with a jig or tube. There is a good top water bite and the bass are being caught on sea walls close to deep water, early in the am and late in the afternoon. There is also a good night bite and the fish are being caught on lighted docks. The shad have moved up in the Chattooga River and Little Spring Creek, to the cooler, more oxygen rich water flowing into the lake, both are several degrees cooler than the main lake and the bass will be more active in this cooler water, look for the schools of shad and fish the flats and edges of the river channel near them. Always watch for bass chasing the shad and have a shallow running crank bait ready.

Striper fishing is fair and they have left the main lake and have moved back up in the rivers and creeks, the Cave Hole in Little River and in the lower Chattooga River and Little Spring Creek are all producing some fair stripers. Live shad down lined 8 to 10 feet deep and free lined is the way to catch these summer stripers. The Chattooga River from Cornwall Furnace up past the Gaylesville bridge is also producing some good stripers.

Crappie fishing is Fair and a few fish are being caught during daylight under docks on a 1/24 ounce Jiffy Jig. The crappie will be on a night bite for the rest of the summer, so grab a can of OFF and your lights and come catch some summer time slabs. Some good fish are being caught under lights at night off the deeper docks on live minnows and jigs, also crappie are being caught at night under lights, in 8 to 14 feet of water on the old river channel ledges in Little River and the old Coosa River channel.

Report Updated August 27, 2010

LAKE GEORGE/EUFAULA IS FULL, 89 DEGREES CLEAR DOWN & CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair at best. The best bite has been a early and late top water bite along main lake grass beds. Fish have been holding around the points in these grass beds as well as any isolated clumps. They have been biting a variety of baits such as a Spro hydro pop and a black buzz bait. When the sun gets up, go for the deeper ledge bite in the 20 to 25 foot range mid to up lake. The Watch the bait fish on the surface and find them and the bass will be close by on a ledge. Try working these balls of bait with a Stanford lures Razor shad on the shallower ledges and a Mann's 20+ on the deeper ledges. The ledges that have standing timber or rocks have been more consistent than just the bare ledges. Down south fish the deepest brush piles that you can find. The best bite that have found on the southern end has been in any brush or rocks in the 30 to 35 foot range. Fish a larger worm in green pumpkin with a one ounce Tru-Tungsten weight on a Carolina rig or Texas rig. Just fish this bait really slow and when you hit any brush dead stick the bait. Watch for any schooling action throughout the day and have spook ready. In the grass, use a frog in natural red or frog pattern along the thick grass edges.
