Cumberland River Fishing Report Updated June 26, 2009

No real change in report.. you can add that the white bass are doing really well in the creeks still with some good size fish to 1.5 pounds being caught along with the great Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Striper Fishng. Walleye still being caught but numbers are down a bit.

Cumberland River Report
Chuck Strange at Strange Bait and Tackle reports that good stripers are coming in every day mostly on live bait rigs and on Fin S.
Walleye bite has slowed some, but is still fairly good.
Brown Trout are hitting #5 Orange Crank Baits as well as the occasional Pinns Minnow.
Rainbow Trout are holding along the gravel bars.
River is about half way up the ramp at Burkesville.
You can fly fish the bars but you will need a boat to get to them the water is at just about the perfect level for fishing for both Trout and Stripers.
If the weather holds and the forecast is correct there will be no rain for the next week. This might bring the river down some unless there is some rain in the upper reaches of the Cumberland.

June 9, 2009

Chuck Strange opened his store in 1989
This year more walleye have been brought in for weighing in the last week than he has seen in all that time. Over 40 so far to be weighed and that does not count those caught and not brought to the shop.
High water in the spawning creeks dropped out and the Walleye are in the deep pools on the river in droves.
Biggest fish so far is 10 Pounds 2 ounces. 3 fish caught by one client 21 pounds
Eerie Deeries and Night Crawler Harnesses... 3 hook harness are working best. Chuck has them
Stripers - Big stripers are being caught in the deep pools. Live bait and 10" Fin S working well.
White Bass are still running at the mouths of creeks in schools and with the river dropping back to normal level the fish will hold in schools in pools. Many are being caught on small white twister tails and road runners.
Brown Trout - Good fish to 8 pounds, mostly on #5 Orange Shad Rap the usual and some on live shiners fishing for stripers.

June 1, 2009

River is still putting out some good stripers at the mouths of creeks and in the tributaries.
Water is still a bit high.
Look for large schools of bait fish to find the Stripers.
Rainbows and Brown trout are good at the mouths of creeks as well..

4/24/09

Water has Dropped 3 foot last 3 days. IN parking lot, up until today. Dropped over night but still very high right at the top of the river bank and in some places higher..
Stripers are hitting well on live bait. Biggest this week is 19 pounds out of the heads of the creeks.
Bait fish are holding deep, so you will not see the fish swirling. Skipjack are plentiful in the creeks and holding deep so the Stripes are deep. Catch your self a skipjack on a twister tail and cast that and you will hook up sooner than later right now. Skips are running as big as 12 inches. Might be a good time to set another state record for Skipjack.
White bass are also good, as well as Brown Trout and Rainbow trout in the heads of creeks.
Good stripers have been seen by the folks fishing. Some as large as 40 + inches.

The river is still at the top of the ramp in Burkesville.
Good white bass fishing in the mouths of the creeks an up into the creeks.
Good brown trout being caught off submerged gravel bars
Rainbow Trout are fair, on live bait, crawlers, and on spinner baits.
Skip Jacks are up in the creeks and most are catching, as many skips as white bass.
Mouths of the creeks should be some of the best fishing on the river right now. With Skip jacks in the creeks it will not be long before the Stripers will start going after them.
As long as the river stays clear fishing should remain excellent on the river.
Stop by Strange Bait and Tackle and talk to Chuck or his staff about the fishing for the most up to date information. Most of the guides get their bait from Chuck so he gets daily and even hourly updates.

4/12/09
River is still up a bit but clear.
White bass in the creeks, being caught in good numbers up to 3 pounds. Marrowbone, Crocus are doing really well.
Brown trout over gravel bars. Fishing for Browns is really good. Red and black stripe cranks 5 to 6 foot deep.. and live shiners. Fish the entire bar, the Browns are holding both on the sides, the ends and at the tops.
Most of the Creeks are full of skipjacks. This means that Stripers should be close by. No reports of fish being caught but most are fishing for trout, so no surprise.
