    7:1 Suggestions

Learning to bass fish with baitcasters (instead of spinning reels) and am looking for a decent 7:1 without spending too much. Anyone have experience with Quantum Code Red? It's in my range and the rest of my gear is Quantum, which I seem to do well with at this time. Thanks.

I don't have any personal experience with the code red, but I know several people that have one, and they all wish they would have looked at a different reel, or saved up a bit for a nicer reel. I would save up a little more and get an Curado E7 (one of the best reels I have used). BPS johnny morris signature reels are on sale for $129 now. IMO that is a much better reel than the code red. I have several of these and they are nice, and very durable, and easy to adjust. I also really like the Quantum energy PT's. If you look around you can find one of last years models for around $100 - it is a sweet reel.

I have three of the Quantum KVD series reels and really like them. I have a 7:1. 6:3. and 5:1....happy with all three. The BPS brand reels have always been very reliable also....very similar to Flueger (sp?)

I work in the fishing department at Bass Pro Clarksville and will tell without a doubt that the best value priced baitcaster is the Bass Pro Pro Qaulifier($99.99). You can get it in either a 7.1:1 or 6.4:1. Depending on what baits you are looking at fishing would determine the speed real you should get. A 6.4 will be a more versitale reel and inable you to fish a wider range of baits with one reel

i just bought a BPS reel and dunno if i will buy another one. i got the BPS Nitro. it lives up to its name by hauling out those lunkers, but i dont like the thumb bar. its plastic and everytime i go to cast it i think i'm gonna break it. i've broken all my other reels with plastic, so maybe i'm just prejudice. and then sometimes the thumb bar won't release completely and i have to repress it and try again. dunno.

Been pretty satisfied with a Quantum I've had for about 15 yrs. Shimano's pretty hard to beat. The manufacturers definetly keep puttin out some reels to drool over that cost more and more. Depends on what your pattern of fishing, how much you fish, and of course how much you can warrant spending. I generally use the baitcasters with baits that eat up the spinning real gears. Spinnerbaits oh ya.

Thanks for the wisdom you all. I like the Quantum PTs I have now, but none are a 7:1....I'll save my money for a PT Burner or BPS....on sale with a tix for 20% off.

If you are going to hold off go to Bass Pro next spring on the reel trade in days. Buy a new zebco and donate it to the kids charity and save $100 or more on a good reel. Cost you $10 a kid gets a new reel and you save $90 in the process. Shimano does not honor the trade in, so if you stay with quantum or daiwa you will be in good shape, and do something nice for a young fisherman!

Thanks for the info about the kids trade-in. I'll probably get one before next spring and will need something else by then of course LOL! I work with about three youth tournaments or clinics, including Kid & Co. Thanks again!
