    Fishing Budget....not sticking to it.

Guys, I am not sticking to my fishing budget this winter. Given that there is a few ideal days to fish the last few months, I find myself buying in place of fishing. Although everything I am buying is needed, I didn't expect to buy it all now.
I have sank $250 in soft plastics, $40 in pignjigs, $300 in reels, $30 in line, and about $100 in miscellaneous other baits. Mainly I have stocked up for the prespawn, making sure I have everything I need for the first few tourney trips and practice sessions.
Can anyone else tell me they too have had this winter-bait-buying disease, it sure would make me feel better, I'm glad I have the stuff I need, and I have not bought anything that wasn't needed (my wife might not agree with that), but I usually buy enough to get me through the year, or close to it. I now have enough for the next 5 years in certain baits, I hope not to lose too many baits and let them pay for themselves in fish. I swore to myself today (after buying a KVD sig. series 600cx baitcaster) that I was not going to buy anything else that has to do with fishing unless I was totally out of a necessity item. Hopefully I can keep my own promise.
    Take care.

I would love to help you out but just went thru the Bass Pro Shop 2006 catalog for the 3rd time and found NOTHING to buy. Sure there are a couple of items, Aqua View and GPS Console Depth Finder, but not going to buy them now. As far as rods, reels, plastics, hard baits or tackle boxes, need nothing. All that shows is that I have too much stuff to begin with. Spring will be here soon and I surely will use up some plastics, crankbaits and other stuff to make room to buy some new.

Just came back from the outdoor show in Louisville. Kind of disapointing to tell you the truth. Came home way under budget. Found some deals on crank baits and got to see a presentation by Crash on Musky fishing (which was very good).

    Mostly hunting stuff and boats.

Wal-mart usually doesn't have alot of good baits on hand but in the last 2 weeks I picked up ALOT of baits on sale, several of the glass Husky jerks were marked down to $3, had alot of Mann'd Baby series cranks on sale for 2.50 and some of the Stanley spinnerbaits for 2.50...they also had Spiderwire and Sten Superbraid on sale too. Stop by and check them out.

Organized my tackle this morning and if tourneys were won based on the amount of ammo brought with each fisherman in his boat then I would have a much better shot. Tackle Box #1, hooks, sinkers, crankbaits, jigs, buzzbaits, jerkbaits, fish formula, leatherman weights 44 pounds. Tackle Box #2 plastics only weighs 19 pounds. Tackle Box #3 Spinnerbaits only, 9 lbs. Tackle Box #4 Winter time float and fly stuff weighs hardly nothing. Tackle Box #5, Striper baits Redfins, Slivers, plus hooks, sinkers and beads for when pulling boards, 22 lbs. Total comes to 94 lbs of tackle, way too much stuff. This is why I can't find any tackle to buy at Bass Pro.

I am now reorganizing my tackle again, making sure I gather all my pre-spawn tactics and leave the others at home to save of luggage. There is not much left but to just go fishing so I do.....a computer game :). If anyone can find the "EA Sports Championship Bass" game I would advise to get it. It is not your average game, you can actually follow the bass even after screen change, if you call in a fish halfway to the boat, then throw out again, he will be at the same spot you left him, nothing resets itself after screen change. The bite dies after pressure too, real close to the real thing. Enough of that, Thank goodness for Nascar, that will take my mind off the winter slump for a while, as well as tonights "The Contender" fight on ESPN Peter Manfredo Jr takes on Scott Pembleton. I am a diehard Contender Fan, by the way Rocky VI is coming out this summer, sly gets back in the ring. Maybe this will take my mind of fishing a while and pass time faster. January felt like three months itself. Now that winter finally decided to bring its usual weather, February may feel like more than a 28 day month, can't wait for my 1st tourney March 11th. Hoping for a sunny day, no matter what else the weather brings as long asa I have sun for my jerkbaits.

I feel your pain. I have solved my spending problem in a way. Every off season, I limit myself to no more than 20 bucks or so per pay check on fishing gear. By the end of winter I have stocked up on a whole lot of gear and it keeps me from having to spend a few hundred all at once in the spring. I have been to bass pro a few times in the recent past and have picked up several items only to put them back, I have had to tell myself that if I can't catch em on what I have, I need to get better at working the lures I already own, I have more tackle than I could ever use!

    Do what I do

I go to the basement. Turn on the TV to something worth watching. Go get a beer from the frig, go to my table set up to make my crappie jigs. Make several jigs and drink some beer. Make several more jigs and have another beer. After about a dozen or so jigs being made go laydown on couch and take a nap. Get up later and repeat process over till it's time for bed.

Cheaper than going to Bass Pro Shop in Clarksville where I'm now known as a regular. I've spent a small fortune there already.
